Hi there,

im off to tenby in south Wales on the 6th August, starting from Tamworth in the Midlands with my touring caravan. Can anyone recommend somewhere to pull in to have breakfast, that has good parking for my tourer ? Would appreciate any help, as being new to
this towing, the service stations ive entered are not user friendly.

    what route do you intend travelling - motorway or A roads.?

    You should be able to manage without filling fuel over that distance if you  start with a full tank , so you just need a lay-by,  or Mway services and follow caravan signs.  If no caravan signs, use HGV area.

    You have all the facilities with you to make breakfast and use toilet.  I would advise you not to leave outfit unattended.

    It all depends on your route and starting time. I would recommended the following route: M42, M5 south, M50 to Ross, then A40 to Abergavenny, A465 to Neath then M4/A48 to Carmarthen, A40 to St Clears finally A477/A478 to Tenby. This route is mostly motorway
    or dual carriageway, there are major roadworks between Abergavenny and Brynmawr but this should not cause to many problems. About 2 miles past Brynmawr roundabout just beyond the highest point on A465 is a large layby/picnic area on your left. This would be
    about halfway on your journey. Enjoy your holiday.

    I can see why youve suggested that route, but there are a few serious climbs on it.  Why not continue to the M4 at Newport?  Easier run when towing.

    Or if you want scenic head down stright through mid Wales and get there via Llandod and Carmarthen - lilel;y to be traffic free.

    If towing I would head straight down the M5 to the M4 and go over the Severn Bridge.  I know this will cost but with all the roundabouts on the Heads of the Valleys road I prefer it when towing.    The motorway services at Magor just past Newport Gwent are
    OK for caravans with easy access parking.

    I go to Tenby quite a bit, as its virtually my birthplace! _ Actually Robeston Wathen Nr Narberth Pembs.

    Tenby is beautiful at any time of the year, but we have always loved Tenby South Beach. - Park in the big municipal car park above the beach. All our children learned to walk on that beach, but as the youngest is now nearly 40, its a while ago.

    If you like a coastal cliff path walk, Go to the Penally end of South Beach, Park in the Station car park and climb up from there!

    The only downside of Tenby today is that it sadly has become the target for raucus Hen and Stag parties at the weekends, so you do get some groups of fairly drunken yobs and yobesses around.

    The good news is that nearby Saundersfoot which years ago was a bit downmarket compared to Tenby, has improved hugely and I think is a much nicer place at weekends.

    But you will have to go a very long way indeed to find better beaches and headlands than Pembrokeshire has to offer.

    Don't miss Barafundle Bay, Stack rocks, Bosherston Lilley ponds and Stackpole Quay.

    Further to my message just now, - I fully support Oldgirl & Staffys recommendation get down to the M4 via the M5 as quick as possible, and use that route all the way.

    Larki,

    You have gone very quiet, but if I can help at all re the Tenby and Pembroke area's dont be afraid to ask. I may be exiled in Bristol now, but have known the "little England beyond Wales" region for over 70 years!
