Reasonable to wash hair in a washing-up sink?
OK, before I start, it wasn't me!
At Southport last weekend, I took the BBQ to wash in the site facilities, (it was already washed out, it was just a final clean - I needed a big sink). Three of the four sinks were already in use, two by what looked like a couple, and another by a lady who seemed to have already completed a small amount of washing up, as it was resting on the drainer, who was washing her hair.
The toilet block next to the washing-up area was closed for cleaning, and the other open facility was maybe a two minute walk away. It was raining. I did say to the camper, not in a nasty way, just trying to inform her, that the other block was open, as she may had preferred to use a shower. She explained that she was the last caravan in the run, on the old part of the site, and she didn't want to walk even further to the next block. It was more bizarre, than uncomfortable, having someone wash their hair, whilst trying not to splash them with BBQ residue. When she was done, she left the sink spotless, no hairs, shampoo, the next person to use the sink wouldn't have been any the wiser as to her actions.
During the "shampoo", the cleaner, who I don't believe was a warden, came to speak to her, quite harshly, that she shouldn't be using the washing up sinks to wash her hair, and asked which pitch she was on. This was a short conversation, after which, the cleaner disappeared and the lady continued to rinse the shampoo out of her fairly long hair.
After a couple of minutes, two wardens and the cleaner arrived back. The wardens absolutely berated the lady, spoke to her very harshly, with words such as, "You're bang out of order", and other better words, such as "You should use the toilet block, get an umbrella, and organise yourself better", and, ""you might think it alright to wash your hair in a washing up sink, but other campers will be disgusted by it", all of which seemed fair. I did think the "You're bang out of order" comment was harsh, and not perhaps the best way to resolve the situation. I'm not sure whether they asked her to leave the site or not, although I did hear them describing her afterwards as the "lady who is new to caravanning".
It wasn't nice to be in the presence of a berating from the wardens, and I thought they were somewhat over zealous as I said, with the "You're bang out of order" line. The other couple who were washing up stayed quiet, we didn't talk after the lady had left. They were probably as shocked and dismayed at the bizarre events of the last five minutes as I was.
Anybody arriving after the hair wash wouldn't have known any different, but that doesn't make it right. I personally, don't have feelings either way on this, I just thought I'd start a new discussion to open it up to fellow forum members to see what they think, or would have done in my shoes...

No she should not have been washing her hair in the washing up sinks imho, but no she should not have been 'told off' in such as a manner. The warden(s) should have just told her with a smile that it is just not done. No warden should behave that way.
I don't think you could have done more or acted in any other way.

Someone washing there hair in the washing up sink wouldnt bother me. I have gone to use these sinks in the past and found some in a bit of a state (not through people washing there hair i might add) but i just wash it out before using. Others may have different opinions.
I dont agree with the woman being told off in public.

It was totally wrong for the woman to wash her hair in the washing-up sinks (is it also a vegetable prep area?) and she should have been made aware of her error in no uncertain terms in my view. However, the wardens should not have berated her publicly but
should have dealt with it in private. They could have called at her van later or invited her to the office or similar private area. They should also have used polite but firm words in a calm and positive manner.0 -
Wrong in my eyes to be doing that but perhaps not a deliberate act, so a 'word in the ear' in private may well have been the better option.
For her to carry on after being told perhaps gives an impression of 'so what'!! but for most people washing hair and washing dishes do not mix in the same sink, although her hair was probably cleaner than a lot of dishes

As long as the sink was left clean I dont care what she washes in there - hair, dog, boots or anything else.
I have only ever visited the pot wash once about 10 years ago and it was so filthy with scummy grease off a BBQ I never went again.

Wow, 5 pages of drivel, by the usual culprits, in 17 hours.....is this a record????????
Well thanks. That'll be the last time I start a discussion off. Guess you have the choice whether you want to read the drivel or not...

I would have thought the real issue here was the way it was responded to by wardens rather than the "crime" or foolishness of washing hair in an inapropriate place. The sites are there for the benefit of the visitors/members and it sounds as though these
particular staff are unaware of it.For sure, one of the wardens who I dealt with had forgotten how to smile, I had no issues with the other five. Reading a recent review of the site, I'm not the only one who thought this of the wardens, although, giving a balanced view, many reviews compliment
the wardens.0 -
Okay, most people that have posted on this thread seem to be against hair washing in these sinks, however no one has given any reason why they are against it.
My view is that a sink is nothing more than a receptacle to hold water while (most commonly) something is washed in it. As long as its left clean and as how you would wish to find it, and of course no dangerous chemicals are used in it, what’s the problem.
Most (not all) of the pot wash sinks are in open areas and anything could crawl in them when they are unattended and nobody would be the wiser, but nobody is suggesting they should all be in a closed room.

Yuk! I would never dream of washing my hair somewhere that has held greasy, smelly pots and pans. In general, I guess you should use each intended area for its intended purpose - otherwise people might start wash aforementioned pots and pans in washrooms
- revolting thought - as dish washing area is taken up by those washing their hair!0 -

Why stop at this thread ,theres a certain thread in general chat that could do with trimming

On a couple of CC sites there have been signs prohibiting the washing of Cadac type BBQ's ( before you ask where I am struggling to remember) . I assume the reason being that when some folk have finished they have comprehensively pebble dashed the surrounds
with bits of burnt food. As to hair, as I said earlier, I have no strong views on the actual practice. However, if it was holding up pot washing I think it would be better done elsewhere.0 -
Goodness Gracious, another thread ( this before the culling took place and the Arrivals thread) that is totally devoted to the rules of the Caravan Club - is anything interesting ever discussed and debated?

In all my years of camping and caravanning, I've never witnessed anybody washing their hair in the pot wash area, might not be the most interesting thread on here, but I warranted it bizarre enough to see what other members felt.
Perhaps if it doesn't interest you, you shouldn't bother either reading the thread, or posting a negative comment about how interested you are in the thread subject.
A couple of fairly negative comments on this thread have made me think twice about starting any new topics that's for sure.

That's CT in all its glory, Alphonso!
I'm surprised no one has yet mentioned the unpleasantness of finding a stranger's hair in the plug hole of a washing up sink. Ugh!

In the hair washers defence, I took a look in the sink when she was finished, and it was spotless.
