Speed limit

I have read all the posts on here and my opinion is change the wording from "5 mph" to "walking pace" or "1st gear must be used". After all, no one will drive faster than 5 mph if their engine is revving hard!

An auto-box will just change up.

I am sitting in the evening sun on a large site in France. There are no posted speed limits and no rules have been issued. And you know, there are no problems, no deaths , no aggro, and no accidents happening. Why do you guys at home have such problems?

Can any of us honestly put our hand on our hearts and say we've never once exceeded 5 mph on site? Really?
I'm pretty careful about following rules and I agree that stopping speeding is the one rule I'd like to see upheld above all others but I dare say at some stage I might have gone over 5 mph, no matter how carefully I drive.
Seems a lot of "holier than thou" nonsense on here, though!
I have inadvertantly, and was challanged once by a warden
1st gear is the only gear in a manual car which you can go 5mph, it matters not if your in a car or motorhome. Cant comment about an automatic vehicle though.

Just come back from Germany and noticed that even though there were no signs, drivers were keeping in 1st gear and clearly not going over walking pace and i mean everyone was doing this. So, why can't we do this here?

Sometimes I walk in front of the van pointing out possible pitches while OH drives, so I know we are not guilty of speeding
Do you carry a red flag?

Mark, surely part of the problem is that a fixed arrival time will ensure that a glut of arrivals occurs exactly at 12.00 even when the site may be partly empty. A less rigid time would help arrivals to arrive in dribs and drabs
Terry, you are quite right but no matter what arrival time you have, you will get early arrivals. I don't know what the answer is to be honest...
.. where we are staying, one couple are off today there is a notice on the office door advising the wardens are. Cleaning the toilet blocks until aprox 1200 hrs when we went out at 1115hrs there were 2 mv and 3cvans on the arr road

I was monitoring my speed (on sat nav screen) this week on site and lowest my car will go is 7.9mph unless I click down to L on the auto gear box. 7.9 seemed much slower than the vast majority of passers by.
How about a few of those speed monitors with the smiley or not smiley face. That might alert a few drivers as to how much over 5mph they are going? With school holidays coming up no one wants a child to be hurt.

I don't see the link between the 2, it matters not what time you arrive.
On your argument people only speed when they arrive at holiday really!!
If people speed they need telling. The rules are the rules, if people don't like them SPEED somewhere else

Perhaps if we would advise that you inform a warden or perhaps your confident enough to approach speeders and politely ask them to help us maintain the speed limit on site the message may get through.. We try to manage excess speed on site but we are not
always present. If members do report it to the warden team, then follow your concerns up later on ....The biggest risk on site is people v traffic so the safer we can all make it the better......it is pleasing to see we are all concerned....0 -

Sorry, the wardens are or should be trained for this.

Oh I say !!! People know they are speeding, so why would they get shouty if admonished by a fellow holiday maker in the confines of a CC site? 'Fair cop guv' would be the adult response, they are adults to have a lcence to drive a unit
A tip if someone gets shouty, turn and walk away, shouting at someones back carries no weight as the shouter can't see a reaction and soon goes quiet. That's what my young daughter is taught

nor I, particularly, David....just mooting that, if it is a real issue, there is an opportunity to make folk aware...
perhaps leave out some of the other 'helpful info' to make room for this....?
Write your comments here...seems more an issue of those keyboard warriors who like sitting on high horses whilst having a good moan as they have nothing better or interesting in thier lives much like curtain twitchers, toilet block sureveyrs etc. I cannot
say I have really noticed anyone what I would call speeding, maybe over 5mph but not by much. So long as we move around site with care and consideration and make sure we look out for the unexpected such as kids, dogs, little old ladies pulling wastemasters
etc. there should not be any issues.0 -

In my opinion the number of people who seriously flaunt the speed limit is far from insignificant. Particularly on a Friday, when I would think you would be lucky to get 50%
observing 5 mph, at a time when it is more important than ever, due to the amount of movement on site.0 -
Yes, i had been reading this thread and wondering whether there were actually many speed related "incidents" that the club were aware of.
I dislike speeders, on club sites, outside my house, or just about anywhere, but I do wonder if the issue is overblown?
I dont know anything of the Rowntree incident but have read on here that it was not speed related.

So what you're saying then is just because it hasn't happened yet that is okay. The idea of a speed limit is surely to prevent an accident not to respond to one IMHO
I cant see where I say that anywhere in my post......

Fair comment I guess I was responding to the implication in a few posts which seemed to me to be questioning the need for a limit because there hadn't been any speed related incidents
There have been a few incidents on club sites but not sure if any were speed related.

We decided yesterday our last day in Norfolk, to check out a large comercial holiday camp complex we are going to for a music w/end in november with our c/van, on arr the main book in office advised we could drive round and please observe the 5mph speed limit on the whole site ,we saw the campsite warden, who also advised of the 5mph as he had just spoken to someone about it,but as he says we cannot be everywhere but do follow up if it is reported with the reg no ,but he says most of the time they only know about it when they get a report from the office via the visitor satisfaction survey

This is what I was trying to get at. I am aware through work that a lot of speed enforcement on the public road network (camera vans) is supposedly based on the KSI statistics for a road or part of roads. Now obviously we want zero KSI's on club sites but
a perceived important part of enforcement is evidencing to the public that the enforcement is neccasery. Similarly on club sites before wardens are diverted from other duties and sent round the site monitoring speed of members, what sort of actual problem
is there?I tend to favour traffic calming through the use of road markings, chicanes (although artificial obstructions will obviously cause problems with towed units), signage and also I think the "first gear" idea is better than simply saying 5mph as it is possibly
easier for people to grasp. And I know people should be able to grasp the concept of any speed limit, but look on any 30mph road and you will see many don't.0 -
In general, pitches are laid out with a minimum 6 meter gap between facing surfaces of adjacent habitation units. This could be generously taken as 2.5 meter wide caravan and 2.5 meter wide awning. This gives a total width of 11 meters which needs to be
thought of as 36 feet since we do speed in imperial units. Now the MAXIMUM speed -- not the TARGET speed -- of 5 mph is just under 7.5 feet per second, which works out that a vehicle should take just under 5 seconds to pass a pitch.
Just about long enough for the driver to say out loud, "And the next caravan is a Bailey Ranger 21/20 2007 model." [or whatever it happens to be - or something about an unoccuped pitch]
