We are heading to Suffolk next week, an area of the country I haven't visited for a long time. We are staying near Leiston.

Have started doing some research about places to visit, and things to do.

Wondered if anyone could help with any special places that we must see, or things to do. Dog friendly places would be great.

Thanks for any ideas.Smile

We use Suffolk as our bolt hole only being an hour and half from us .

Orford , Aldburgh , Dunwich , Walberswick , and of course Southwold .

The sea food restaurant in Orford,Pinneys in Market Sq , The Froize Inn at Chillesford just out side Orford , pricey but a nice treat.

And or course Aldburgh fish and chips .

    Enjoy ....

Lots of pretty villages built with wool money, Lavenham Long Melford (where Lovejoy was filmed) Clare to name a few. Hadleigh, where In the centre there buildings adjacent from about 6 different centuries. Southwold not to be missed with its lighthouse inland. Aldborough for beauty and Britain connections, Snape Malting's nice walk between the two. If you come as far south as Hadleigh take a look at Kersey and then come down into Essex for constable country, which spans the borders Dedham, Flatford - again lovely walks along the river or hire a row boat.  On our list of to dos Framlingham Castle, not sure about dog friendly there tho. The coast generally.  How long you staying?

Currently in Suffolk lots to do and see as above.  Dunwich Heath, the national trust cafe is dog friendly And has great scones.  Framilingham castle is excellent.  Orford, the path along the estuary.  Sutton Hoo with its walks and museum.  Westleton common
etc.  Which site you staying on H&T?

Aldeburgh fish and chips is known far and wide but the fish and chip shop on Southwold harbour takes some beating too. Lavenham is a must and if you like churches Long Melford and Blythburgh are good and also the tiny church at Wenaston with its Wenaston
Doom. Finally Tim Hunkin's clock on Southwold pier is querky.

Also Woodbridge and the Tide Mill, so many places to visit mostly mentioned already and beautiful countryside. It's a little known gem so keep it quiet. The Maybush at Waldringfield on the River Deben is well worth a visit, good food and beautiful views
across the Deben. Run Cottage is a lovely site close to Sutton Hoo the Viking burial ground and Orford Castle.

    Enjoy.

Helen, have a look at the Where to Eat thread in food and drink for a couple of recommendations I made in January that are dog friendly in Suffolk.

A couple of good walks can be made to those pubs/chip shop (outside benches for dog owners). Park at the National Trust cottages on Dunwich Heath and walk towards Dunwich, more or less following the coast. Eat then return across one of the paths on the heath
    or...

Park at Snape Maltings (worth visiting) and walk on the sailors path along the river Alde to Aldeburgh, about 7 miles and catch the bus back. Pubs in Aldeburgh to recover or...

Park in Aldeburgh and walk out onto the marshes, dog friendly or...

Park in Aldeburgh again. Walk north to Church Lane Caravan Park and walk through it on the public footpath to the exit at the far end, then turn right on a public bridleway and follow this (it becomes a permissive path) passed the bird reserve to Thorpeness
golf course (bearing right alongside the boating lake) and then passed the House in the clouds and Windmill. Good pub with beer garden in Thorpeness and return along the coast path passing the shell sculpture or..

Drive to Woodbrisge and walk along the Deben, dog friendly, taking in the Mill or...

Visit Dedham and walk to the NT Constable buildings across the meadows, dog friendly, ignore cows as they are used to walkers. Two good pubs in East Bergholt if doing circular walk.

    Whatever you do, enjoy it.

Wherenext : found your recommendations on the where to eat thread, (had to wade through all MM's first though Wink)  have made a note and will
    be giving them a try.

Have found some lovely walks on the net,and  am now really looking forward to going.

Will be paying a visit to Minsmere too, and having at least one helping of fish and chips! Laughing Thanks again.

If anyone else has any ideas please add to list.

HelenandTrevor I'm sure you'll have a fabulous time.  Sadly I don't think you'll manage it all in 6 days, maybe you can return next year too

No, I don't think we will manage to see and do everything, so am making a list in order of preference, may well have to pay a return visit. Smile

We've stayed at Briarwood a few times, but always when current owners father was alive (presume he's passed away). Nice site with plenty of room. You might need levelling blocks depending where on site you pitch but it's nicely positioned and you should
    enjoy it.

Thanks Oneputt,  have just read it, sounds great, it hadn't opened when I booked our holiday, as it's our main break I booked early.

I don't think I will be able to see and do everything in Suffolk we want to this trip so will keep it mind for next time.Smile

Just sorting out the bird books to out in the van, hoping I will recognise a few.

Have a good time there, H&T. We certainly like the county. Tunstall forest near Snape Maltings is good for a dog walk and also has purpose built cycle trails. Blythburgh Church is well worth a visit if only to see the wall paintings.

As someone else recommended I'd also say Flatford Mill is worth seeing (pic in my avatar at the moment.) It's lovely just to stroll around and the small exhibition about John Constable is interesting. There's a nice NT cafe there and a good pub just up the road. We stayed at the local CL where you can walk across the fields following in Constable's footsteps and look at some of the views he painted.

If you're near Sudbury you can visit another famous painter's home. Thomas Gainsborough's house is worth seeing too.

One must never underestimate the eastern counties of Essex Suffolk and Norfolk
