Best Route to St. Davids

Hello everyone, this is my first time using the forum as a fairly new caravanner. Next weekend we are travelling from Leeds to St Davids in Pembrokshire. We have never been there and wonder about the best route.

The route planner suggest  coming accross the M62, down the M6, M54 to Chester, then south to Oswestry on the A489 before, picking up the A483 and taking the cost road down through Aberystwyth. Certainly this is the most direct route, but of course route planners do not take account of  us towing a caravan.

I went to Aberystwyth 25 years ago and I seem to recall the route was a bit tricky in a car! Of course there could have been road improvements in the meantime.

I could go down the M5, M50, M4 but that adds about 80 miles. However it is motorway until around Swansea.

I am towing a Coachman VIP 4 berth single axle with a VW Sharan automatic.

Any advice gratefully recieved.

Thanks

John

Hi John, I'm sure you will get some replies from Members who have done the route but we always advise Members to use the website
www.viamichelin.co.uk. Click on the options box under your start and finish point and you can select you are towing a caravan. This then gives you the best route. It will also work out cost/time etc. and can be used
for overseas routes as well. Happy Caravanning :-)

Hi John and welcome to Club Together.  Sorry that I can't make any suggestions regarding your route as I haven't done that one myself; I've only done parts of it, i.e. bits of the M62 and the M6/M54 part, going to Chirk, but, as Tracy says, other members
will be able to offer advice.

No problems with welsh roads. The only caerful bit is from Fishguard old town through fishguard itself. But as it is a ferry port HGV use it. Its a long journey why miss out on the lovely  parts of Mid Wales- have you consdered a stopover?

The last couple of miles to the site is a bit tight if you meet another similar sized vehicle. Just need to look that bit further ahead & stop by the passing points

As has been mentioned the only tricky bit is through the old part of Fishguard where it is single track with terrace houses tight on either side - take a look at Google Street View.  It is not then helped by a tight right turn to cross the bridge over the
river which means you can't really see what is coming the other way.  If you did meet an HGV or Coach/Bus coming the other way it could be problematic. As an alternative you can take the B4329 (which is fine for towing) off the A487 down to Haverfordwest and
then back up the A40 it does however add a few miles. If you do go down to Haverfordwest you must follow the CC directions from the A40 and not use the A487 from Haverfordwest to St Davids as the road through Solva is a shocker if towing a van.

It's a great site in a wonderful area - enjoy

Thanks all for the feedback and the advice. We had our first "proper" caravanning holiday last year at Conistan Water in the lake district. Some of the road were challenging but we managed OK.

I will plan my route carefully based on your advice.

    Forewarned is forearmed.

    Thanks Galland.

    Thanks
