Longleat Approach

Hello Everyone, I need some advice as to how to approach Longleat from the North West.  I will be travelling from the Birkenhead Ferry Terminal and then down the M5 towards Bristol - from then I'm not certain. Should I join the M4, then take the A46 to Bath.
Then the A36 towards Frome.  What is the A46 to A36 route like?  There seems no straightforward route.  Your help much appreciated.

Personally I would come off the M5 onto the A4 (portway) at juntion 18. This is a very good road into Bristol And joins via the A3929 onto the A4174 ring road which takes you across southern Bristol to the A37. Then A 37 to Shepton Mallet, followed by A
361 towards Frome and then onto the A362 before turning onto the access road to the site, as per CC directions. I would certainly prefer this to the route via Bath.

Thank You SteveL for the advice.  I was also looking at coming off M5 onto M4 leaving at J19 onto M32, A4044 then A37?  But this is taking me into the centre of Bristol.  So I think the ringroad you suggest is best option.  Many thanks.

Another option is for me to take the M5, then M4 and leave at J17 and follow the A350 towards Warminister.  Any advice on this route anyone?

Mark that is a good option. Jot sure how the actual distances compare but towing along the A350 bypassing Chippenham is easy and the route from there on is straightforward, although it can get very busy around Melksham. But that would certainly be better
than trying to get through Bath. Happy

Moulesy thank for for your reply, I am keen to avoid Bristol & Bath & Congestion after a drive of several hours, so I think I might go with the route you have affirmed.  I can then double back on that route to Moreton-on-Marsh our next destination.

Mark, are you intent on doing the whole journey in one go? If not there are several sites/CLs along your route which would make for a good stopover. Happy

Hello Moulesy, thanks for your very helpful advice.  We disembark the ferry around 0630hrs so I was hoping to make the enitre journey in a day with Longleat booked for that evening.  If you don't think that's wise, knowing the challenges of the route, I
would be more than happy to have a stopover.  I'm open to your suggestions.

Mark, given that early start and assuming no unforeseen hold ups you could certainly do it in a day, maybe with a couple of rest stops. Also depends if you are the sole driver of course. If you did want to break your journey, the CC site at Tewkesbury Abbey
is easily reached off the M5 and a really nice site in an interesting area. Or a little earlier there is a CL near Worcester called Woodlands Farm which we've used in the past, also easily reached off the M5. In both cases you'd be padtvthe dreaded M6\M5 intersection. Happy

If your opting for the A350 route, another option is to leave the M5 at junction 11A onto the A417 to Cirencester. This opens up the option of an overnight stop at CC Cirencester Park (170 miles from BH). It has the advantage that it is generally fairly
easy to get availability at short notice. You can then take the A429 via Malmesbury, not a bad road, to join the A350 just north of Chippenham. That makes for a fairly relaxed 45 / 50 miles on the second day.

Moulesy and Steve thank you for your help.  With both your efforts I'm going to take the 11A off the M5 for Circencester and head down for Longleat via the A429 and A350.  A good part of this route I'll be retravelling on heading for Moreton-on-Marsh. I
think we're  going to attempt it all in a day, taking our time with plenty of breaks as we'll have a 0630hrs start, so we could make it before tea.

I hope you enjoy your visit, it is a very nice site. The various advanced tickets for Longleat work out good value, and can be purchased through the link on the site web page. However, they must be purchased online in advance and given the site WiFi is not
that fast, and mobile broadband almost non existent, it is worth doing this before you arrive.
