Glastonbury road congestion?
When the festival is on for the weekend does it generally impact on the Sunday travel along the M5 motorway heading south to Devon around mid day? Having never been in that area during the festival I don't know what to expect really but would doubt it. Thanks
for the helpful replies I know I shall receive. Kind Regards, Roy

Knowing the M5 very well, as we live close to it, going south to Devon will be absolutely no problem. It could be busy round the M5/M4 intersection but once you get past the Weston Super Mare junction It will be clear?
However going Notth from the Glastonburt/Street/Wells turning until you get north of the M5/M4 intersection will be pretty well stop start. We always think Sunday, outside of school holidays is the worst day to travel north on the M5".

We are going to Priddy on the 25th. Going via Frome and Shepton Mallet. I assume that as we are going to be going via Shepton Mallet and up the A37 from Shepton Mallet, we should be OK?

catherine, not sure which part of wiltshire you are coming from but i would be trying to keep further north than Shepton which is only 3.3ml from Worthy Farm (the festival site)....much too close for my liking...the A37 may well be totally chocker.....
id try and keep to the north and the A 39 if possible...
Melksham, so we were going Frome - Shepton and up. I'm trying to avoid Norton St Phillip because it has a nasty staggered cross roads which I wouldn't wish to tackle with 7.5 meters + car.
Right now our Summer Holiday is going down the toilet. We can't get into CC Cirencester or Broadway. Don't want to go to Longleat as it's too restricitve now with dogs which is a shame as it's a lovely site. Not sure I want to go to the CCC site at Verwood as we are going to Back of Beyond in August already.

We are rather frantically trying to find an alternative site to go to. Logic to me suggests the little mud pluggers should be already there enjoying the atmosphere, but as BB is a local and will have lots of experience i can't really ignore his advice.

Thanks to all & the personal knowledge is very much appreciated. We only had this window of 2 weeks holiday so had to go that weekend heading for Dawlish. Last time I was even on the M5 was 29 years ago, if it was built then, & I had no knowledge of when the festival or exactly where it was until very recently. We shall hopefully be fine after Saturday night stop at Chapel Lame club site south of Birmingham. We were going to drive all the way home on the Sunday in one go 2 weeks later but after hearing the news we shall now leave on the Saturday & stop again at Chapel Lane club site again on the way north. Thanks very much. Better get off & book the site whilst it is still available. Regards Roy

What about Burford seeing you were originally thinking about the Cotswolds? Just over an hour away from Melksham

As a frequent traveller on the M5 the only advice I'd give for weekend travel at this time of the year is to avoid the Bristol and Weston super Mare area from late morning through til mid afternoon. It's a good idea to clear the Bristol area as early as possible. For travel near Glastonbury Festival avoid the Shepton Mallet/Castle Cary areas.

Write your comments here... Well this is going to be our main summer holiday pretty much. Although I have another 4/5 nights booked in the New Forest in August. So although we still need to go back to the lovely CL at Burford, I don't want to spend
8 nights there. We have actually managed to get a booking at Lincoln Farm Park near Witney.

Glad to hear you have got something sorted, which CL are you using in Burford? I was thinking of the club site. Always good to get personal recommendations.

I have been in the Glastonbury area, at Old Oaks, twice recently at the same time as the festival. During the festival there is no problem with traffic and all roads in the vicinity are very well managed but police and stewards. As previously said, festival goers tend to stay on site once they have arrived. The Monday after the festival can be very busy travelling from the area to the M5/Taunton and Wells, Bristol and Bath. Similarly traffic travelling to the site on the Monday and Tuesday before can be busy.
This year I am going to Glastonbury, for the third time, traveling to Old Oaks on the Sunday before the festival and departing the Sunday of the festival. I don't anticipate any problems.

Glad we cancelled looking at the news.

I saw it on the local TV news earlier. Delivery drivers stranded, school busses running 45 minutes late, lanes full of parked cars, fields full of mud, MHs and cvans pulled off into a holding area. Happy times!

All those on here who complain about CC sites should be given free entry to Glastonbury, supplied with a pop up tent, a packet of wet wipes and four days free vouchers for fermented yak milk and goat curry. Lets see if that changes their outlook....

There are times I am glad I live 400 miles away from South West England.
