Just a bit of info for any dog owners booked at River Breamish caravan club site. Warning notices are on notice boards on site re prespence of adders both on and around the site. We couldn't let our dogs off lead off site for fear of them being bitten. We
had a close encounter with one on the lake nature reserve walk. Might be worth the caravan club website adding this warning to the info page on this site. The warden told me there were no preditors to keep the snake numbers down. Great site if your not a dog
owner!

That's a good warning for dog owners and adults and children egrant, thank you. Better safe than sorry. Not only River Breamish site that is prone to adders, our friends had to get Wardens to deal with one last year on N Y Moors.  I bet "dealing with Adders
safely" features in the training for Wardens!Happy

There are Adders everywhere in the country. They are shy creatures and wont bite unless frightened, they will move out of the way. Just be aware of where you are placing your feet when out walking in the countryside.

Our friends had one in their awning, hence the Wardens wading in to help. Usually quite shy though.

I am with Kennine, they are almost everywhere certainly there is a risk on any rural sites.

I've flagged this up for staff to consider highlighting this issue on the website page for the River Breamish site.

If walking somewhere I know there may be adders I have piriton with me to be given immediately in case of a bite and I always find the number and location of a local vet when I am somewhere on holiday - I have the kind of dog that likes to run full pelt
into trees etc. and has in the past tried to make friends with an adder (not bitten thankfully!).

Wonder what the additional fee is .........

I was geo-caching (treasure hunting with a GPS) last summer with my brother and nephew in Cornwall - bro picked up a large rock to look for the cache and screamed - an adder lazily looked at him before slithering off - he needed a pint to get over the shock...any
    excuse!

We often used to see snakes when living in South Africa, but it was over 20 years in the UK before we saw our first one in the UK and we live in a rural area.  It was about 3 foot long.

Thank you for your recent post regarding River Breamish Caravan Club Site and I would like to be able to address your concerns.

As you rightly say we do have notices up during the season to make visitors on site aware of the issue.  However we have had no reported incidents in the last three years at least, we will continue to monitor the situation closely and if we feel that their
presence has become of major concern to site users and their pets then we would look to include this within the site description.

I do hope the above has gone some way in answering your concerns.

Lovely creatures are adders and we are lucky that they will get out of your way if they feel your presence or see you. I've seen a dog actually step over a sleeping one on a path in Holt CP.

The wardens at Exeter racecourse told us they had to get RSPCA in when they open up the offices early in the season as they often find them there. We've seen them on this site so those that have dogs beware when using Exeter.

We're presently at Ingleboro CC site and there are also warning signs about adders. I'd love to have seen one but unfortunately haven't.

was at river breamish 2 weeks ago and spent part of every day quietly wandering about hoping to see an adder but alas they eluded me. i have lived in rural areas my entire life and have yet to see a snake! it must be my clown sized feet scaring them off
    lol.

Hampshire is supposed to bea hotbed of them. I've lived here all my life and haven't seen one yet and I walk quietly.
