M6 or M1/A1M ?
Leaving Wiltshire for a tour of Scotland 0230hrs Wednesday. Been trying to find details of roadworks on both M6 and M1/A1M before deciding which route to take. Has anyone any info on roadworks/closures on either.

M6 Stafford to Knutsford always delays at rush hour 7am to 9am and 430am to 630am, as long their are no accidents should be ok between these time and before and after., that's assuming no accidents, Stafford to Knutsford well known accident spot.

I went up the northbound M6 yesterday between junctions 30 (M61) and 43 (Carlisle) and there were some roadworks around the Morecambe exit road at Junction 34 where they're putting in a new link bridge but it wasn't sufficient to cause major delays.
I believe that the A1 at Scotch Corner is closed today but can't help with the M1 sorry. Highways Agency website will give you more information.

I drove to London & back yesterday. there seemed to be 50 mph limits all over the place on the M6
and not a worker in sight! ....

We live near Durham and I would definately go M5,M6,M74, there are 20miles of road works in Yorkshire, and the A1 from Durham will have very slow traffic at Newcastle either through the tunnel or past the Metro Centre, road works and the A1from Newcastle
to Edinburgh is rubbish. Do not think of using the A68 Darligton to Edinburgh, you could loose your van in some of the pot holes and the road is like a Big Dipper. We used the M5,M6,M74 last year and they are much better.0 -
http://www.theaa.com/traffic-news/index.jsp will give you roadworks and latest traffic conditions. On iPad so can't do link

We were at Durham Grange recently and the roadworks on the A1 (m) were pretty bad. You will also find the A1 between Newcastle and Edinburgh has a long length of si glre carriageway which can be slow going although there are great views near the border.
Not sure about the M6 South of the border but the M74 is clear until just before junction 5 but unless you are passing in the rush hour these are unlikely to be a problem. Do however stay in the middle lane after j6nction 6 as the inside one becomes a slip road and can have queues.
If you intend using the site at Strathclyde Park use junction 6 and head for Motherwell. On the dual carriageway stay in the inside lane and turn into the park at the lights. The site is near the far end.

Many thanks for all the info folks. Seems the A1 may be a bit of a problem. We are booked on Yellowcraig for first few nights so I think we will use the M6/A74 to Abington then A702 to the Edinburgh by-pass then east to A1. Thanks again for all the info.
