I have posted in other threads and BB said it here Haven etc. offer low off peak prices to attract people in the hope they will frequent the restaurants,  bars, bingo, other paid for entertainment which of course bumps up the overall spend per night probably
in line or more than a CC site. A CC site does not offer anything to offset low pitch fees hence the difference.

I really am at a loss why everyone is so het up about empty sites off peak surely for those using them it's better, more space, less people using facilities, better choice of pitches etc. and maybe a chance to stay after 12 on the last day (at the warders
    discretion of course)Worried

I assume that you aren't from any sort of commercial background, Michael?

Increasing revenue by offering bars, bingo etc also requires additional overheads. Each of these activities will be required to pay for itself. The camping part of the site will almost certainly also be required to pay for itself and won't be supported by
    these other activites.

On your second point.....yes, we would like to stay on emptier, quieter sites. But that situation isn't sustainable and it is clear that operating at a loss for many months of the year won't be allowed to continue. So sites will close for longer priods and
some will be sold off. Unless the CC recognises the realities of life, takes on the competition and sells more pitches.

Ive just come across this thread as I'm looking for a site in Derbyshire wanted to go to Chatsworth but despite the extortionate price of £26 per night it is full and thats off peak  and as far as I'm aware there's not much to do other than the house. Can anyone recommend a nice cl with views in this area?

    Moderator Edit:

It might be a good idea to post your question regarding a CL into the Certificated Locations Section.

Ian I do understand the reality of commercial activities but your argument is wrong. A site such as haven would have the bars etc. open even if no one was there hence offer low pitch price to get people in similar to loss leaders in supermarkets, same as
the holidays for £9.50 in newspapers get the punters in and they spend in the bars, restaurants shops etc.   Why can't the CC model work yes it may lose money some months but over the year it would make a small profit or break even.

Perhaps the answer is only open sites weekends and peak periods then you can all be assured of full money making sites if that's what you want.

We are away until 22nd May ,so cannot talk to our new neighbour who has recently retired from Bourne Leisure (you can check on line who they own)and my take on conversations  we have had is that good"touring"pitches are  a "recent" innovation (compaired to the two clubs)to tap into the ever growing market of "staycation"c/vanners,and it suppliments their main income of "all in stay on site"holidays targeting  famillies

The touring sites we have used at Haven are not in the center of the statics but nicely removed. No one forces you to use the bars etc.

We're going away for a week and a half just before half term (the last weekend is the first half term weekend).

We are going to Haven in Scarborough for 8 nights for £54.  That is without a CC discount as I didn't realise I could get one.  I didn't even consider that there would be a discount for being a CC member as, like the original poster said, it seems a strange business decision by the CC to arange a discount wtih a competitor.

On the Friday we are then moving on to a CL in the N Yorks National Park for £5.50 per night.

Whilst CC Sites do look lovely, there is nothing wrong with Haven Sites and the price difference certainly doesn't see justified.  It has got to the stage where we don't even bother checking CC Sites as they are always so expensive in comparison to what you can get elsewhere.  Everyone is free to make their own choices obviously but for me, why spend more money when you don't have too.

We used Broadmeadow Farm near Bakewell last year, it has hardstandings and was £12 per night. Very nice little CL and lovely people.

We have just returned from 2 weeks at Haven Greenacres Porthmadog full service pitch on a hardstanding for 2 weeks £184.50 for the pitch 6 people for that price. The first week the site was full 2nd week the site was approx half full, even with the cheap
site fees it still couldn't fill the site. So cheap sites doesn't mean full sites. The new site was opened in March 2014.

yes, i know who BL own....

yes, i know what their bread and butter mode is....as you say.

yes, i also know that they must be a pretty savvy operation to recognise that the two 'clubs' have fallen way behind the times in delivering what 'should' be their bread and butter business.... 'touring holidays'.... rather, turning to the more lucrative, easy,  streams of 'insurances'.....

BL have stepped in, looked at the poor state of the product offered by the clubs (old, tired infrastructure, poor access roads, high prices, poor levels of staffing etc) and decided they can do a better job...(new sites, new fac blocks, eco driven facs, modern MHSPs, wide open access roads and entrances, loads of helpful staff, rock bottom prices, abundant extra facilities if desired, great locations, etc, etc....

while the cc 'fiddles' with insurances others are muscling in on their (former) 'core' market....touring

I agree Surprised.with some of your points ,but it still does not detract from the facts that the majority of sites with both clubs are. busy with families in the holiday periods during peak times of the year and at what seems by the majority,to be at an affordable cost, and yes there is room for improvements, but as I understand it the 10 year continuous program of improvements to each site takes a time when there are best part of 200 sites to keep pace with upgrades, its only in the last few years that Bourne leisure have started upgrade their few sites

I hink JVB66 has it just right.Time for CC to go back to basics if they are to compete with the opposition and the new players in the market. Take a good look at HO and cut out the waste, sidelines.Update the sites and price realistically. As I have shown
above the opposition is not markedly more expensive in Peak as the CC.

If anything the discounted rate during low season should be uplifted by say 10% and the high season rate reduced by a similar amount.  The club likes to pretend it's all inclusive so let start showing some of the inclusiveness
    to families!

How does that work? Peak is already full, so a drop in income. Off-peak is already struggling because of uncompetitive prices and would lose even more customers, so a further drop in income.

I think the CC are already working towards that cost model......and no, it doesn't work.

Where is the factual evidence that the cost model is not working? the uk fair weather caravaners that will not come out between october and easter (thousands) are the ones that will not come out no matter what discounts are on offer by anybody,we have several
friends who think we are are mad because we do,and when you consider the occupancy of any site in the winter in the uk it wiil not improve with our fickle climate

...but there are also thousands of vanners who do van all year round and these are the ones that the club is not attracting.

moreover, the club is promoting a stay at Haven to the tune of 7.5%.....

    run me by that one.....Undecided

..I think the "thousands "who use their RVs all year are not that many ,if it it was the case then where we store our van would not be as full 550+ plus vehicles of which looking at the book out sheets in winter is normally empty when we come and go,whereas there can be up to 30 in and out each day this time of year

just out of interest I looked at the Haven site for a couple and 2 kids (up to 15, at Haven not 17 like the club) in their Lakes site and in August it would cost a staggering £55 pounds per night. Any club site in the lakes in around £30

Maybe they could borrow a couple of the neighbour's children for the week to take full advantage of the Haven deal!

theyre out there.....too busy touring to mess about with the Hokey-Cokey of in/out, in/out etc......Undecided

...Still very few "out there"  compared to the time from about april onwards

how old are the kids youve included in your comparison....

the same as the Haven age range. I only mentioned the fact that a 16 year olf at Haven would be classed as an adult even though still at school

If there are fewer caravanners in the winter, is it then not more important that the club does it's best to attract them to CC sites?

No one is suggestng Haven etc are best all the time. Certainly at peak periods everyone jacks up the prices. What I would like the club to trial is discounts off peak when sites are almost empty, to see if those of us who  have looked elsewhere will return. We
certainly would. When comparing prices Haven is for 6 people per pitch and at peak times you would expect families to use the sites.
