Grass pitch re-opening

I am afraid virtually the whole of club sites are full at weekends so reducing pitch numbers would be a major problem. Again in peak season during the week a large proprtion of sites are full or virtually full so I would not agree with Nick.
I dont think you are right there, I have just browsed through sites in the South of England for the next 2 months and very few of them are full at weekends and non at other times
...Are you saying south?or south west ?as the south west sites are rarely full except during the peak holiday periods where as the south are nearly all difficult to get onto most of the time, and the system only shows vacancies which may only mean 1 or 2 pitches

Pembrey is suffering major flooding to a large number of grass pitches and some hard standings are also under water. Those grass pitches in use are extremely wet and are cutting up easily. Wardens are canceling bookings at the moment, see other post , mistakenly
in overseas sites section.0 -
One of the problems that wardens have when easter is early as this year do they chance it and open the grass pitches or keep them closed ,and then find its dried out with empty pitches over easter, next year easter is much later so "could "be drier

pitchesI looked purely out of interest through what the Club calls "Southern England", try it yourself if you don't believe me. As for how many free pitches there are why does it matter unless you travel in packs.
..It does not matter a jot,but it does not prove that there are many empty either, but it does show that not being able to tour without booking in the UK is a Myth

Sites that are leased, such as Threeways Marazion, and possibly St Agnes will never be HS. Would alter the landscape too drastically. Take out the EHU bollards and you would hardly know there was a site there. Both are reasonable for good ground, being sandy
underneath. We used to book night before to stay on Threeways most years, rarely got booked up, few nights in June. We use a CL now, have to book that a year in advance!0 -

Not sure what your point is, you say sites are full and they are not . As for the "myth" of not being able to tour without booking , its no myth for me and never has been, I dont leave home without a UK booking ....And your point in the first place was?and when have i said sites are full? i said dificult to get on

You're right about an early or wet Easter causing pitch problems JVB, we've had problems when we've stayed at St Agnes at Easter (unable to open the site at all one year.) I can't imagine they got off to a good start this year either like quite a few other sites which must have been water logged. We decided to stay at home this time!

That sweeping statements to the effect that all sites are full most of the time is not true, as for touring without booking that you have introduced to the discussion, there are other reasons why I wouldnt attempt it, principle reason being that should a site be full the next one is not going to be just around the corner .
...Never mentioned by me, but you have by your checks on southern sites that you can still tour

I think at this time of year, when grass pitches can move in and out of the figures, availability can fluctuate widely. As we get later in the season fluctuations become much less significant. What is certainly true is, that for weekends, availability can rapidly evaporate even at less popular sites. Using CC sites, non booked touring would be very risky most of the year.

I have too echo the thoughts of many on this thread. It has too be HS for me everytime.Grass can get churned up in a matter of minutes then it takes a long time to get back right. We seem to have wetter weather these days which we have too accept and design
sites accordingly.peter.

The other issue with grass is when ground sheets have been left down for long periods killing the grass underneath. I have seen pitches that have no grass on a large area. A small amount of rain and all the dirt gets dragged into your caravan or motorhome.
At £30+ per night in peak periods, I expect something better.0
