Scottish loch sites
any recommendations for a club site (either club) on the shores of a loch or a river not to far north. Good dog walks as in off lead areas is a must.

The best might be Bunree?

I doubt you could beat Bunree.

Bunree is a great site. Excellent views, fantastic walks with or without the dog. We've been going there at least once every year Even before there was a toilet block --Love the site.
If it's too far north for the OP they could try New England Bay or Yellowcraigs, both on the water's edge with miles of walking straight from site..

Millarochy Bay is a good site with great views, The "west highland way" runs past the site entrance. -- One small narrow steep climb over the pass of Balmaha, otherwise good roads all the way.
Cashell - good site just a couple of miles or so north of Millarochy Bay on the same road.
Luss on the West side of Loch Lomond on the outskirts of the village of the same name has a walking/cycle track which runs just outside the site entrance.
All good sites with great views.--- Luss can be a bit wet so choose a h/standing pitch if going there.
Enjoy your holiday wherever you choose.

The Loch Lomond sites can get very busy although the area is great for walking, you could also have a look round Callander and the Trossachs as an alternative. Have you looked at sites in the Borders along the river Tweed, some nice places there too.

You're far less likely to get midges on sea shore sites than by an inland loch.

Luss C&CC site is very good and you can get a pitch right next to the loch which gives you great views also the site has easy access to the beach. Maragowan CC site in Killin is close to a river and only a short walk from the lovely little village of Killin where there are a couple of nice pubs and cafes also the views are lovely. Over the other side of the country Forfar Lochside CC site is right next ot a loch where there is a good cycle/walking track that goes right round the loch and there is access to this direct from the site and the town of Forfar is a short walk away.
Hope this helps

Not in my experience - except that you may get a bit more wind and that keeps them away.
I was going to suggest the Morvich site which is by Loch Duich (sea) and has also good walking in the area, or Kinlochewe by the side of Loch Maree (fresh water). This is notorious for midgies, but great mountain walking.
You might also want to consider sites along by the Caledonian canal.
Unfortunately, most of the best sites are in the north of the country.

Sorry, you said Loch or river. If you're happy with a riverside site, then I thoroughly recommend Silverbank at Banchory . Right on the side of the Dee and Deeside Way footpath. Also Crathes castle grounds (free) are an easy walk away.
I can also recommend Aberlour Gardens and Grantown on Spey sites. Both a short walk from the Spey and the Speyside Way footpath.

Would not recommend the Luss site myself, mush too noisey, both from road noise, which goen on all through the night, and also from the hotel adjacent especially at weekends when they have a do going on there.

The Club's Edinburgh site is adjacent to the Firth of Forth, an estuary rather than a river, I suppose. But there are good dog wals along the promenade in either direction just below the site.

It depends on far north you want to travel ! You could try Blair Drummond AS site, although not on a loch there is a walk you can do that takes you to the loch and plenty to see in the area. You could go a bit further north to Forfar Lochside it has a
2.5 km walk round the loch and plenty round the area to see. I am sure there will be lots of other sites round and about, Stonehaven is beside the sea with lots of walking. Hope you find something0 -
North Ledaig cc site it is not on a lock but a lovely sandy bay.
Write your comments here...While agreeing that North Ledaig is a great site, lovely views great walking and cycling in the area. ( We go there often, it's right next to "Oban International Airport" the planes come over at about 300ft above the caravan). It is not a CC site - It is however a commercial site run by one family. It is in the book as an Associated site.

Not sure how far you want to go North but all club sites by a loch or river are well North. You could try Strathclyde Park which is close to a man made loch in a large park with plenty of dog walking. It is however in an urban area and close to the motorway
making it noisy but there is plenty to do in the area.Alternatively the club has nice sites at Garlieston and New England Bay on the Solway Firth. Both are lovely rural sites and have plenty of dog walking.

I'll second that. New England Bay and Garlieston are both lovely sites. Plenty of off lead walks. We and our friends had a week at NEB followed by a week at Garlieston last year. We've stayed at both sites many times, but it was the first time for our
friends .... they loved both sites, but they prefered Garlieston. Our friends have 3 very energetic cockers, so maybe Garlieston would be the best choice? Then again, if you pitch near the storage area at NEB you can just walk through the gorse directly onto the beach

We have stayed on North Ledaig, Garlieston, both very good for dogs. But our favourite at quiet times, and I stress this very carefully, is Yellowcraig on Firth of Forth. Site is couple of hundred metres from gorgeous beaches, and lovely pine forest walks,
and has the lovely town of North Berwick a couple of miles away. Brilliant site out of holiday times, but not for those who enjoy peace and quiet when it is school holidays! Easy to get into Edinburgh either by road or on train, great walking country, lots
of castles and houses to visit if you enjoy this sort of thing. Can highly recommend a day at Royal Highland Show, was dog friendly last time we visited!0 -
We are venturing up to Grunmore Altnaharra for a couple of nights as part of our 2 week holiday.
It is right on Loch Navar from what I understand.
Have always wanted to get right into the remote wilderness. Taking the inflatable kayak too.

It's always the way isn't it.
We have only managed down to the South coast a couple times as it is so far away from where we live. It doesn't stop us hankering to visit again !

It's a great spot, Alex. I'd post some pics but.....
Yep, it's a long way from where we live but we've been to the far north many times. It helps being retired and having plenty of time.

Approx 3 light aircraft a week? We were there once when the military landed helicopters and Hurcules aircraft but it wasn't a problem. It's a great AS and we've visited most years since 1992.

and quite right too Tinwheeler. I'm sure you worked long and hard enough for it.
Another few years for me yet.
Cheers.
