Pull in York to Whitby
We are towing to the North york Moors site just outside Whitby next week.
Its a fair old tow (336 miles) and as the Mrs is in work until 10pm on the Sunday night my plan was to travel overnight inorder to avoid all the traffic.
Obviously we wont be able to get on site until midday so am looking for somewhere to pull in, have a brew and get my head down for a few hours when we've got past York.
Suggestions from people in the know most welcome.

Once you you have got past York, you are not too far from site. You will either have to take A170 out of Pickering and tackle Blue Bank and go to site via Whitby (think very carefully about this depending on your outfit) or approach site via coastal route
from Scarborough. Our OS map is showing some parking signs on this road A171. Something might suit. Busy road though at times. There is a pull in at the Flask Inn North of Scarborough off main road, but this might be busy as there is a Caravan Park there as

I seem to remember a car park alongside the Hole Of Horcum just north of Pickering on the A169 which would be empty overnight. Close to the road though so I don't know how much sleep you would get.

It would be somewhere to kill some time. Not really worried about Blue Bank, if buses and lorries can use it, so can I.

The Hole of Horcum layby is pay and display now (just to let you know) and may not be suitable for sleeping in as very busy. There are a couple of laybys on the A169 after the A64 and before Pickering. Often seen MH's in them parked up for a cuppa!

If you are leaving at 2200 or later ,it maybe an idea to take a break earlier as you will have already travelled about 300mls when you are looking for a break? depending what route you are taking would it not be better to use a service area on route?

Scarletsfan, I have just driven the route you will do tonight. When you come off the A64 towards Pickering and Whitby, (A169 at Eden Camp), after about 5 miles you will see a Farm Shop called The Whole Hogg on your right. Immediately after it on your left is a very large layby, separated from main road by a big verge. Looks ideal for what you need. You can then decide on your route from Pickering. There are road works on the A169 after Saltergate causing long tail backs.

After passing the large traffic light controlled roundabout at York you have a short section of dual carriageway before single file begins and about 1.5-2 miles further on is the Highwayman cafe which has a large layby, this is separated from the road by a grass verge and lorries do park up there waiting for the cafe to open. Or if you continue past the hole of horcum there is a left turn to Goathland with a car park about 200mtrs from the junction I've pulled in there when I've been too early for the site. We are also going to Nth Yorks Moors on good Friday and will aim to be there for 12.00 but if it's close enough to that time we ring the site to ask if it's ok, usual response is sooner you're all on sooner I get a break. Enjoy your drive.

Large pile of road chippings and repair vans taking up most of space due to ongoing road repairs between Hole of Horcum and Goathland turn off.
Tailbacks across moor have been extensive at times!0 -

Hope you did get there in the morning, Jimbo......there was a multi car accident on the A1 in the Friday afternoon and also the traffic on the A64 was horrendous - before it even got past York......
