Merrose or Chacewater

We are hoping to get away at very late notice to Cornwall just before Easter and as Merrose has vacancies, we were considering whether this would be a good choice. However, Chacewater would be just under £98 cheaper for a week, and has very good reviews. Has anyone visited both and can suggest whether the extra cost to visit Merrose is warranted. Your advice would be very much appreciated.

BM, can you confirm which site you mean when you say Chacewater, please?

Merrose Farm is a fairly typical CC site. It's off the beaten track and a fair way from shops but is situated on the Roseland Peninsula which is well worth a visit - it's a lovely area. The church at St Just in Roseland is a must see - the grounds are beautiful.
St Mawes is nearby and there are beaches at Carne and Pendower.

Chacewater village itself is on a rat run between Redruth and Truro and honestly has little going for it. The area is useful for reaching West Cornwall and both north and south coasts. I might be able to add more if you name the site.

    Hi TW

i was looking at the Chasewater Park site, TR4 8LY by Truro Tractors seems quite central and good reviews. Merrose also has good reviews so, your description of the area helps, thanks. Do you know if it is easy to walk to the coastal path from Merrose.

Yes it is just walk tothe top of the site ,turn right then immediate left walk down the lane and you can get on the costal path. I have not been to Chacewater site but know where it is. My personal choice would be Merrose as plenty more nice walks.

I was afraid it was that one - the adult only site. Let me start by saying I've seen people post on here saying they've stayed there and had a wonderful time.

Some years ago we visited the site with a view to staying there. The owners were grumpy and unwelcoming. Rules seemed to cover every conceivable activity and, although I didn't see the machine gun towers at the entrance, I sensed them. We didn't stay there
    but went elsewhere.

It depends largely on what you're looking for, BM. The area around Chacewater is not so attractive as that near Merrose on the Roseland but will provide easier access to more western parts. The lanes on the Roseland can be very narrow but the destination
    is worth it.

I can't be sure about reaching the coastal path from Merrose but suspect it's unlikely.

    Hope that helps.

Merrose is fine for the coast path as Canenriot said and not far from Portscatho for shop and pubs. You can use the King Harry Ferry to get to Truro and Falmouth. The Chacewater area is good for SW Cornwall, but sorry don't know the other site.

You can also walk down to the beach , its a good mile going down the lane near the coast path its very quiet and you are rewarded by a beautifull beach , Pencurnick i think its called , there you will find The Hidden Hut which does very tasty cakes and  about ten minutes furthur walk you are in Portscatho .

Write your comments here...I have a flak jacket if that would help. With the narrow lanes, is that an issue getting the van to the site, or is that when driving onto the penninsula.

If you are looking for a site in the Redruth-Truro area, my I suggest you take a look at Globe Vale, just outside Redruth.  One of our favourite sites in the area.  When in Cornwall, it would be our first choice..

We will be staying at chacewater Park in June. Never had any problems with the owners who are more likely to welcome you with open arms . The sit is run by the father and two daughters. Showers and toilets are always clean and tidy. We booked when we were
there last August Bank holiday, and will be booking for next August Bank holiday. Over 5o's get a discount for a  week's stay. £84 for our stay in June.

BM, it's really the lanes beyond the site to the obscure little coves that are really narrow. There is a biggish commercial site a bit further on from Merrose where the road is slightly narrower and people get there without difficulty. I knew of somebody
who took his huge RV to Merrose year after year.

TW, is the A390 access at St Blazey still closed, this might affect travel towards Merrose? We found ourselves doing a big detour recently.

You mean for the level crossing work? No, it was only closed for a few days. Network Rail was out of order there.

Have stayed at Chacewater Park and had a lovely time.  Owners were very welcoming and the site is well looked after.  It isn't picturesque but it has views of old engine houses (tin mines).  At the end of the lane you can get buses to Penzance, St Ives and
Truro.  It is peaceful.  If you cycle it is close to the Bissoe to Portreath cycle trail.  Chacewater village is not very interesting.  A bit of a backwater now that the main road diverts round it.  It is midway between Truro - Redruth.  It has a special place
in my heart, my Uncle and Aunt were landlords of the Red Lion (renamed The Rambling Miner but it is closed) and I was staying with them when I met my husband who came down to Cornwall with his brother and 2 friends.  I got evicted from my bedroom to make way
for the paying guests.  We have now been married for 47 years and they say holiday romances never last.  Lol.

Looks like DSB has found a good option aswell. We will check availality when we know if we can get away. That might make the decision fo us. Sounds like any would suit us, thanks to all for the advice.

If you're still undecided on sites I would suggest Porthtowan Tourist Park which is quite close to DSB's suggested site and valise to the north coast whilst being not far from the A30.

If you do ring Globe Vale, you can opt for a full serviced pitch (with water hook-up and drainaway) if you wish.  They do them on both grass and hardstanding at a very reasonable price.  Although close to Redruth, Globe Vale is out of the town, in the countryside
with views across to St Agnes in the distance.   Tesco is only about 10 minutes away as is the caravan and spares place up at Scorrier.

Thanks for all suggestions, we finally got away 3 weeks ago, but as Chasewater did not open until 1st May, it was not an option. Dornafield was the first stop for the 7 night deal for £99 serviced pitch. Merrose hosted our second week with the site only
a quarter full it was very peaceful. Week 3, we are sat looking outover the sea at Tintagel. Not sure about week 4 yet.
