Baltic Wharf non awning pitch/sun canopy query

We are staying at Baltic Wharf for 6 nights in August and were only able to book a non awning pitch.  Does anyone know if we would be allowed to use our sun canopy with or without sides?  Say it was really sunny(!) and we rolled the canopy out would we have
to roll it away at night again?  Are the non awning pitches fully tarmaced or is there gravel?  It is hard to tell from the site description.

Thanks for any help.

Thanks Rog.  That'll be us putting the beds up and down each day then!

The official line is that you would be able to roll out your sun canopy fully or partially as long as it complies with the pitching distance guidelines. The pitches at Baltic Wharf are gravel so if your pitch is big enough you could use the canopy. The CC only have a few awning pitches at Baltic Wharf now and have recently squeezed in some extra non awning pitches.

You can roll out the awning canopy to full length as long as it complies with pitching distances, you will need to ensure the sides are removed or rolled up as they cannot be used and that your vehicle is parked in the visitors car park

Mark, is there not enough room to have the canopy out and park the car at the other side of the caravan?

I think we're having second thoughts about going there - is it a bit of a squeeze all round?

Unfortunately there's no visitor parking at Baltic Wharf but you will have room on the pitch to park your car.

A non awning pitch is smaller than the standard awning pitch, you will need to speak to the wardens about this issue

Good idea MarkW, the present wardens are friendly and should be able to advise further.Smile

Here's a quote from a member of staff when this question was raised previously:-

    "Standard Pitch without awning

Members cannot use awnings of any shape or size (including porch awnings) on this pitch type.  Motorhomes can use a wind out sun shade as long as a 3 metre fire separation gap is maintained.
Members may be asked to wind the canopy in sufficiently to achieve the 3 metre gap."

Caravans can use a sun canopy Jill as long as there are no sides and the 3 metre gap is maintained..

Can I assume then that MH's do not "pitch to the peg" but park where the car would go to enable them to wind out the canopy or is it a case of going nose in to utilise the car space for the canopy?

If this is not the case and there is sufficient room for a canopy with "parking to the peg" then it appears that there is equally room for a caravan to have an awning provided the towcar is parked on the same side as the awning.

We found the same, BB.  We've only been in winter months too, but remember seeing that on non-awning pitches, there was only room for car and caravan, and only just!

Agree BB.  IMHO BW isn't a site where you'd be sitting out, either in an awning or next to the 'van.  If I wanted to do just that, I'd pick a different site.

The location is ideal for everyone, being so close to a city centre without needing transport, other than your own 2 feet. Although it's good for cycling too, along the river and then on to Portishead Marina.  Or the other way to Bath.

It's not a pretty or relaxing site but as it's on a limited life span I would recommend it as the best place to enjoy Bristol, so use it while you can!

BB, we've been lucky enough to get a pitch 3 times!  A couple of times in March, when the weather was good enough for a couple of nice cycle-trips, as well as visits on foot to the centre.

Knowing you like cycling too, if you ever manage to get a pitch there again, do try the cycle ride along the river, then via a small village called Pill, to the marina at Portishead.  An enjoyable day out.

There are three consecutive nights up for grabs this month and plenty in November. We've managed several breaks over the last two years. Lots of good shows and events at the the theatres and museums in Bristol and good shopping too! I love the ferries to the city centre...nearest I'll get to Venice at the moment!Wink

this site has a (virtually) unique quality within the CC portfolio, in that it lies within strolling distance of a large city centre.

this is a site for getting close to city life, ambling to city 'interests' and having a meal out without having to drive.

its not really a long stay 'holiday destination' where awnings, chairs, tables, bbqs etc are set up....its just not that type of destination.

MHers are so lucky in that this type of site can be found over and over again throughout europe, giving (often free) walking access to major towns/cities.....theyre called aires.....

to lose this one (effectively the nearest thing within CC to a city aire) from the CC group will be a real shame....

I would tend to agree. Even the awning pitches are not really that. If you erect more than a small awning, there is not really room for the car. Even with our pull out, on the pitch we were on, it was difficult getting the car off the roadway. If you do
BBQ, in the better weather, a pull out is useful as the seagulls fly sorties, checking on what they can swoop in and pinch when your back is turned. As to sitting outside and watching the world go by, you would be better off taking your chair out of the back
gate and sitting on the harbour side. I have seen a few do this.

Or even take your fishing gear as OH and others do and just sit alongside the harbour outside the gate.Smile
