Hi, We are going to be travelling from Aberdeenshire down to Crystal Palace in the summer in our motorhome.

Any recommendations of night stops?  We were thinking somwhere past Manchester and around Birmingham area. And if possible somewhere not too far away from the motorway.

Any comments and advise much appreciated.

What are you lookning for,....a club site or will a CL suit? There are a few CLs reasonably close to the M6 between M/C & Brum......Gravestones CL,Nr Knutsford, No.109 in Site Directory; 42 Hassell Rd, Sandbach, No.111; The Lodge, Stoke, No.1530; Park Fm,
Stafford, No.1538..... to name a few.

Why would you take the western route down the UK anyway when you are heading to the eastern side of London?

The western route has better roads. Going down the motorway system is much faster than using the scenic route down the Eastern side.

According to Michelin the A1 is only ten minutes longer and 20km less. If I wanted to stop at a CC site I would come the eastern route and stop at Richmond in Yorkshire which is only two miles from the motorway. When we were planning a trip in the opposite direction I was put off the western route by a lack of a good nightstop.

Maybe try Chester if you want the western side, if you're using the M42/40 try Chapel Lane or Harbury?

Can recommend 42 Hassell Rd, Sandbach, No.111 for a stopover. Stayed there a couple of years back en route to the lakes. Friendly owner, easy access from motorway and cheap fuel station to top up before onward journey just off M6.

Happy. Use left and right arrows to navigate.

If you are using the eastern route, which would certainly be my choice. Milestone affiliated site is right alongside the A1, just north of Newark. Quite a nice site and not too noisy. Worthy of a slightly longer stop if you wanted to visit Sherwood Forest,
Lincon etc. on your way up or down.

It will also significantly affect the length of time spent on the M25 as well, perhaps more relevant than the location of a night-stop.

From the M40/M25 the Croydon route could be used with a motorhome. No doubt the OP has a route already planned.Smile

We always use Chapel Lane CC site when on our way south. It is a very nice site and very close to the motorway so very handy. Also there is a nice CL near to Leyland Greenbank Farm CL which is only about half a mile off the motorway again it is nice and
the owvers are very friendly also as it is a CL the site fees are cheap.

If you like a supermarket car park, IMO. Used it once and would never use it again. Also had the least polite wardens we've met in nearly 40 yrs of CC membership!! AHHH

Warwick CC would be a good alternative, only a few minutes from the motorway but watch out for race day closures.

.....the layout 'formula' is std CC i reckon, not much different to loads of other CC sites....not really a supermarket carpark, imho, and ive stayed in plenty.....Wink

most recent review post on google was one praising a 'clean tidy site and the best wardens'......Happy

weve used it a few times, about par for the (CC) course....

I was thinking of all those pitches on the concrete!! AhhhYell Of course the wardens may well have changed/been push away, since we were there.

We've travelled down from Perth using both routes, there is little in it providing there isn't major roadworks in progress. The east side does have more places to stay. We have used Chapel lane with no problems as BB says, also Warwick racecourse,  very
handy if you want to go out for something to eat, we've also used Harbury all these are of vourse on the west side, fairly long drive though from Aberdeen. If going down the east we use Durham, Thirsk, Clumber all do able as an easy drive from Aberdeen. Could
I just say that if you want to eat out then Thirsk is the best placed to do so out of the ones I have mentioned for the east route, and Warwick gor the west route.

When we have travelled down to Hastings and down to Wales with the caravan we have stopped at Carlisle area at Ghyll Farm CL site - lovely wee family run CL working farm.   When heading down to Hastings we head over the A66 then down the A1 - stopped at
another CL in Peterborough very basic but huge site.  We have stayed at CL in Nottingham area too, cant remember the name worst one we actually stayed at was in scotland just off the M74 was dire left a poor review on the CL site,   Good luck with your travels
down south and finding lovely CL's.

Stratford upon  Avon Leisure Centre. Dedicated MH parking, well lit, good dog walk, very quiet. £2 for night 8pm to 8am. Showers and loos in LC if you need them. Good dog walk as well. Not sure if on your route though.
