Stopover to Moffat Scotland.
We are off to Scotland end of July, but first we have to go to Somerset for a famiily do. Have decided to take the van with us and then travel up to Moffat from there. We are going to stay near the M5 for easy access, . The total distance is 330 miles,
so aim to stop about the 160 mark. Anyone give us recommendations for a nights stopver in what I think will be the Staffordshire/Cheshire area of the M6.

Have not stopped here but it is handy for M6

We stopped at Hollins Green Farm CL when we drove from Glasgow to Somerset. It was lovely and peaceful and only £10 for the night. About 10 minutes off the M6 on country roads but nothing too narrow and it was worth it to be away from traffic noise.

Try doing a search by map for either club sites or cl's close to the M6

Uttoxeter Racecourse CC site. Going north, head in via Stafford Jcn13 and out to the M6 via Stoke Jcn15. That way it is not too much of a detour and you cut off a chunk of motorway while still using fairly decent roads.

You could try Gravestone Cl, Northwich, No.109 in Site Directory, It's about 4 mls off the M6 at Junct.19, and is opposite the road up to Arley Hall. Have just used it last week, ideal for a stop-off, £10 pn during the week, extra at W/E
BTW We've just booked The Lodge for our trip down to Huntingdon from Cumbria.

Blackpool is not far off the motorway but might be a bit expensive for one night.
People seem to think that Blackpool is close to the M6, but the CC site is at least 12 mls from Junct.32.

Sounds a bit of a 'long stay' site.

If you have the whole day and can leave by 09.30, it is do-able in one day, even with a couple of toilet stops and an hour for lunch. If you wanted to.
Roads are good, about 6-7 hours driving. Would depend on the day of the week.
I generally prefer to take shorter "hops", but on our first or last day of a trip we often do 300-350 miles. From here to Tewkesbury, for example, is 333 miles, which is no problem as it's mainly motorway.

Thanks for all the helpful comments about accessible sites, very helpful.
KjelNN, yes we have done 300+ miles in one hop, but these days we prefer to do shorter hops, that way we feel more refreshed. In days of old, when young (and probably foolish) we would leave home (West London) after work on Friday evening, drive through
the night, with a couple of stopovers for a short nap and food and arrive in Fort William sometime Sat a.m.. Takes about 3 days now, lol.0 -
We sometimes use a CL near Leyland on our trips south. I think it is called Greenbank Farm and it is only half a mile from the motorway so very handy and the owners are very friendly. It is listed in the Club sites book
I live not far from there and used to pass it going to and from work every day. It's on the A49, very close to junction 28 of the M6 (Leyland).

There is road noise at Greenbank Farm, as you can see and hear the M6 traffic but ideal for a one night stopover due to its location.

I've often wondered about noise there, Jill. It's sandwiched in between the A49 and the M6, but I guess that after a long journey, you'd be too tired to notice it!

The noise has never been a problem for us but we have only ever stayed there for one night at a time so it could be a problem if your were staying a bit longer

Bridge House Marina near to Garstang is a great little site - non CC. Forget Blackpool, it's too far. Bridge House has pub 5 mins walk, and Garstang itself is 10-15mins along canal towpath. No need to cook!. They can sometimes do a quick stopover in the
"carpark" so you can leave early if you want. Just off M6 on A6. Nice easy run to Moffat (2hrs) from there.0 -
hI,
Have stopped at Moffat, Kendal, CC and CCC on route from Devon to Skye. Kendal CC site is a lovely site but it is better as a short break rather than overnight, the Kendal CCC site is OK and not far from the M6. We liked Moffat and intend to stop there
again as we head North.Pippin

There are traffic problems in and around Kendal following the recent flooding. I can't see them getting better in the short term either, as there are more flood warnings out for the Lakes at the moment because of the remnants of the storm that dumped so
much snow on New York.0
