Castletown from the M1

I've previously posted a thread which now eludes me :(

We've just come back from Chatwsorth which, even with snow, was a breeze to get to from the M1. Having had the worst journey ever last time (and first time) we visited Castleton, I'm already nervous about our trip in 2 weeks.

Can ANYONE recommend a reasonble route from the M1?

We join from the M18 so am happy to go straight across OR head further down Cesterfield way as long as it does not involve Sheffield city centre (specifically Eccleshall Road  - which is a nightmare even without a van).

I've looked on street view at my sat nav's suggested route and I'm already quaking in my boots...

To be fair, it's probably a route around Sheffield that I'm looking for. If anyone has navigated one and could share I'd love them forever!!!

    You certainly don't want to follow the route that my satnav took me. It was "interesting" enough in the summer without the thought of icy roads/snow.

    I think I'd stick to the Chesterfield/Baslow route which the CC suggests too.

    The last time I was leaving Castleton and heading north to Scotland, I had no problems at all following the sat nav through Sheffield and up past the Hillsborough stadium.  There were no holdups, towing was easy it's the quickest and most cost effective
    route.

    If you come from the M1 at Tankersley roundabout it will take you down Penistone Road and before the Hillsborough ground is a  new junction near the new Sainsbury store which replaces the old roundabout - you will follow the road around right past the Leppings
    Lane end of the ground and thence into the one way system which will take you into Hillsborough shopping area.Beware of the bus gate(£30 fine) at the crossroads when you turn up to the Rivelin Valley -make sure that you follow the signs which take you round
    some back streets and bring you out opposite Towsure at which point you will turn right  up the Rivelin Valley road and on the route to Castleton.

    Personally I would take the A619 out of Chesterfield towards Baslow and then follow the CC directions through Bradwell. How you get to Chesterfield comming from the M18 is up to you, there are several good routes. Probably the easiest, although slightly longer, is to take the M1 south to junc 29 and use the A617, which leads you in to an easy straight through route at Chesterfield. An alternative to the CC route once you get to the Calver traffic lights, is to take the B6001 towards Gridleford. This actually turns sharp left (junction) in Grindleford and this section is steep, bendy and tight for about 200 metres. The rest of the 2 miles or so to Hathersage is better, but still not good, as the road is not that wide and particularly in summer it is difficult to decide what bits of hedge have unyielding rock behind. Once at Hathersage it is an easy run on the A6187 to the site. I have used both ways and the CC recommended is by far the best.
