Your Isle of Man Experience?
I travel alone and having been to Scotland many times I would like to visit the Isle of Man in my small Citroen Romahome Duo. I have a toilet (only used if desperate) and need good shower facilities and electric hook up.
Does anyone have any experience of touring sites in the Isle of Man or any useful advice to offer please?

My only experience in the IOM, was competing in the Manx International Car Rally on two occasions, fantasic island and smashing people.

Linda, there appears to be at least 8 campsites on the island. Try this link:-

Thank you for your replies. I have searched campsite listings on the internet but was hoping someone might have personal experience .
Write your comments here...we took our PVC to the IOM in 2008 from Liverpool and stayed at the Glenlough campsite.Public transport is very good on the island. There is a bus-stop just down the road from the campsite and a pub just a bit further on at Indian
Queens.Top end of the site has hard standing and the showers are clean and modern. From Douglas you can get a bus or trams to all parts of the island.Parking a small mhome like yours would not be an issue in most places. The weather is very unpredictable so
be prepared.High points were the drive over the mountain and Peel, low points the driving rain and Ramsay-a dump!Hope this helps,Ken.0 -
Indian Queens, IOM? I thought that was near Newquay.
I'm a bit concerned at Admiral "smashing people" on his car rally. Did you loose it on a bend, Admiral?

I think someone might have asked about the IOM before but I can't find the link. If no-one steps forward with up to date info you could try looking at the IOM site reviews on

I've never been to the Isle of Man myself but I think it must be an interesting place to visit. I'd be interested to know about ferry crossings to get there and back and whether the sites just allow motorhomes or caravans as well? It wasn't until recently, that I learnt that caravans were permitted in Jersey. I believe there are two sites there that take them.

IOM is very restricted for caravan touring Malc, since April 2015 you have to meet ALL the criteria before a permit is issued.
Permits will be issued to caravan owners provided they meet all the following criteria:
• They are visiting for the TT Festival, Classic TT or Southern 100
• They have a return ferry booking for the caravan within three weeks of arrival
• They are staying at an approved campsite
My only experience of the IOM is my grandaughter visits their regularly to see inlaws, says its a beautiful island.0 -

Thank you all for your help and replies. I did find later some of the information mentioned in overseas sites section. Thank you again.
Write your comments here...Good luck, Linda, with your plans to visit the Isle of Man. Like DaveFL2 says, it's a beautiful island so I'm sure you'll enjoy it there. You can tell us all about it when you've been. I'd be interested to learn from your experience.

Hi Linda,
I'd vote for Ballamoar Campsite (www.ballamoarcampsite.im). It's by Ballaugh village, in the North West of the island. Friendly owner, well kept toilets and showers, washing
up and laundry facilities also. There's a common room type building, with fridge/freezers and combination microwaves, if you don't fancy cooking in your van. If you don't fancy cooking at all, there's a very nice pub in the village that does food, a 2 minute
walk away. There's a Spar shop with a post office in the village as well. Site is a grassy field with no hardstanding, though that didn't seem to cause any problems when we went over with our motorhome for the Classic TT last year.
There are loads of nice places to go see, to name but a few that we went to
Point of Ayre
Maughold Head
The mountain railway to the top of Snaefell
The castle in Castletown
Niarbyl Cafe/Visitor Centre
Port St Mary/Port Erin/Sound of Man
Laxey Wheel
and if nothing else, the drive up the glen road from the campsite across the moors to Douglas
It may be stating the obvious, but if you're not into motorsports, then avoid the weeks when the TT and Classic TT/MGP are on. The roads that comprise the course are closed for races and practice, and even when there're not closed, you'll find people riding
around at alarming speed. You'll also need to sell your soul to afford the ferry fare then.
Cheers

Please does anyone know of hardstanding camp site in Isle of Man? Thank you

I can think of plenty other places to visit that actually want us thier. The Isle of Man seem to go out of thier way to make it difficult to take a caravan over that little bit of water. If they don't want us, fine, i will spend my money elsewhere.

It's hardly worth taking a Caravan over to the IOM. Dont see why taking a small camper over there would cause any difficulty. Try -- "ukcampsite .co.uk"
The last time I was there, we stayed in an Inn in Douglas. Very central to all the amenities.
The Island is very interesting with many places to visit. The best time to go is during the TT racing.

Only if you like crowds and restrictions on travel.

Can't help with campsites, but love the IoM. Sea crossing cost with the sole operator puts me off taking the 'van
