A39 Devon / Cornwall

hi, looking at doing a Devon / Cornwall tour having never been there , starting at Woolacombe then continuing south, directions for other sites are all from A30 at Exeter but thats means a trek back over to M5

Eventual question is the A39 from woolacombe down a suitable route

Thanks

Goodness, yes, it’s The Atlantic Highway - a very good major A road.

The bit to avoid is the Porlock section into Somerset but heading west you’ll be fine. Where are you heading after Woolacombe?

Correction, Joanie, you are creating the impression that there are only 2 decent roads in Cornwall. That is not so. Being local yourself, I assume that’s not what you meant.

Whilst the A30 is the major trunk road running down the spine of the county, there are numerous other A roads in Cornwall suitable for towing. Look at any map and you will spot them. The B roads too are mostly usable with care. The very location of caravan sites situated by B roads tells you they are doable

Sorry if you got the wrong impression, of course the caravan can get down most roads. If the bin men / women can get down those roads then a caravan can, but the impression that I was trying to give was to check the map as there are a lot of narrow roads on the map in Cornwall. Just to add another few words of advice , if the club gives directions to the site, then use them.

I just check out all 'suspicious' roads on Google maps before I set off.

Thank you tinwheeler, we can avoid that section at porlock by coming of the m5 at junction 27 as per site directions,

After woolacombe , willingcot, camelford, CL near penzance, merrose, Plymouth sound, dornafield, then start heading north back home to Lancashire

You’ll be fine. You’ve picked some areas with plenty of good scenery.

Personally, I’d not bother with Camelford as there’s not much to see and would substitute the Tintagel site instead with its fabulous sea views.

Enjoy your holiday in our glorious county.

It is a good road, but in the unlikely event you plan on dropping down the B3232 at Barnstaple towards Torrington, [route to the A30] do not attempt it. You will have 10 miles of hell and high hills that really are unsuitable for a caravan.

I did it last year from Damage Barton just outside Woolacombe. (8m motorhome towing a car) You will have no problem but I recommend changing from Willingcot to Damage Barton. The latter is a much better site. Padstow is another good area to stop off on the way to Penzance.

Devon and Cornwall is a lovely area to visit but you only have a couple of main roads in Cornwall. Are you doing the south coast of Devon and Cornwall , one to look out for is Hillhead in Devon, they're doing it up at the moment but it will be open July onwards.

And those who have time can add Bude, both sides of the Camel estuary, Mount Edgcumbe, Kingsand /Cawsand, Tavistock, the fringes of Dartmoor. and tne area around Salcombe…among others.

"of course the caravan can get down most roads". Yes that’s the point I was making. Farm traffic, buses, HGVs get around very well. People live at the end of these roads and many are caravanners themselves.

"there are a lot of narrow roads on the map in Cornwall" There are a lot of wide roads as well! Nobody should be put off.
