Pulling with 22 inch low profile wheels
Hey all,
Thinking about buying a new car with 22 inch low profile wheels. Merc GLE.
Anyone else pulling on these tyres / had any problems/safety issues?
Thanks
Paul

We had a Mazda Sport with low profiles quite a few years ago. I know we changed the car pretty soon afterwards. Didn't like the stability but it just have been the outfit as a whole. Fun to drive solo but expensive on the petrol.
Don't think my experience will help you much but it keeps the thread going.

A bit closer to your question. My uncle tows with an E Class Merc 270 diesel AMG. It runs on 20" low profile run flats. I do no find it particularly comfortable, but that could be his lively approach between getting from A to B. He rates it as a tow car, preferring it to his V8 Range Rover.

We tow with a Land Rover Discovery D350 on 21 inch wheels with fairly low profile Pirelli Scorpion all season tyres - no issues at all. As others have commented the ride is likely to be less compliant even on air suspension than a smaller wheel with higher profile tyres.

I towed our Elddis Crusader Storm with my GLE400, excellent and stable tow car and no problem with the tyres except the £500 each replacement cost at 5000 miles.
In the end I could not live with the unpredictable power delivery, particularly during DPF regen.

I have a Touareg with low profiles and find no issue. I believe the GLE is fitted as standard with air suspension, so providing you don't exceed the 100Kg nose weight of your caravan hitch on the ball then there should be no issue. In fact, the reduced sidewall depth should increase the stability because the sidewall flex is reduced.

I tow with a Discovery on 22 inch low profile wheels - no problems. As good a ride as I had with an e class estate but it does have air suspension which the Merc did not. I suggest you ave nothing to worry about
