VW T ROC Towing Experience

Hi, we're just about to swap back to a caravan after a few years of owning a motorhome. We have a 2025 VW T ROC 1.5l petrol and plan to get a Sprite Alpine 4 (which we've had before). Has anyone had experience of towing this or similar caravan with a T ROC and can share experience of how it feels to tow? We've only towed with a diesel car before and we're worried the T ROC won't have enough 'oompf' even though the spec says it should be fine

I swapped from 2.0L diesel engine VW Touran and Skoda Yeti tow vehicles to an Audi A3 1.5L petrol with the same engine as your T ROC but a few kg lighter. For the last 3 years I have towed up to 4,000 miles a year an Eriba Feeling 425 weighing 1350, possibly 1400kg. Whilst my Eriba is a low profile van at 2.26m in height, it is far heavier than your Sprite Alpine. I have never felt it lacked "oomph" and would happily replace the Audi with another vehicle with the same engine. I have found the engine a far better unit to tow with than my previous diesels with the same torque figures, but admittedly less bhp. The engine is extremely flexible and has the torque available over a far higher rev range. On one occasion I towed from Merseyside to Devon in 6th with cruise control and recall having to drop a gear for the first time when around Bristol. I typically average around 32/34mpg with a full car when on our long French holidays, Towing my previous 1200kg Eriba it was typically 34/36mpg, 40mpg in Holland. A bit more weight would be nice, but I tow at 50/55mph and not had any stability issues.

I would put your details into TowCarCalculator

On the site it gives my combination loaded with 300kg in car and 350kg in van 4.5 starts and 2.5 stars, hence my comment about a little more weight would be nice.

This is what I'm towing, so you can see it is not really small.

Thanks for the photo. I went on the tow bar calculator website, it's really useful, it gave us all the information (and reassurance!) we needed, thanks so much for your help
