When I mentioned this to Mrs C, she said that there used to be a club site at Windermere? I can't remember but she's usually right.

It's probably the one that the C&CC now run at Bowness. We stayed there one time when it was a club site.

@Cornersteady I think it was called Braithewaite Fold and as mentioned by @Wherenext now run by the C&CC. We stayed there many years ago when it was a CMC site, it was very handy for Windermere. Not quite sure why the Club let it slip through there fingers?

Surely an Affiliated Site is one allied to the CMC but run by an owner. I've never heard the term used for a site that isn't owned/leased by CMC and but is manned by them. If the CMC have a lease and manage the site it's regarded as a CMC site, not Affiliated.

I've just checked and the Park Cliffe site is on the CMC website map and is flagged dark red, which usually denotes an 'Affiliated' site which you can't book via the CMC website. In this case it's flagged that way because it isn't yet integrated into the CMC website booking service but will be shortly. It will then lose its dark red marker and be flagged as a full CMC site with the usual lighter red marker. Oddly there's no information about the site joining on the website latest news section.

You are assuming booking will be via CAMC’s booking system but it may not be. It may stay as an AS and be run that way but with CAMC staff doing the day to day running. Don’t assume anything!

I'm assuming because AFAIK no current Affiliated Site is staffed by the CMC. Affiliated sites are staffed by the site owners who have an agreement that the site is promoted by the CMC and CMC members get a pitch price discount. When the CMC lease a site it's marketed as a CMC site not an Affiliated one.

Most of the Affiliated sites I have used in the past have continued to be independantly run by the owners and bookings made direct to the site, not via the Club website, the advantage to members is that they get a modest discount. Affiliated sites are usually there to plug gaps in the Club's network. I am trying to think of sites run by the Club on a contract basis, not saying they don't exist but they are not popping up in my old memory, perhaps someone can help? Am I wrong in thinking this is an uncommon arrangement with Park Cliffe?

Well, we shall see. As I said, never assume anything. The times they are a-changing.

This is what it says about booking on the CMC website page for the site:

'Online booking is coming soon. In the meantime, call the campsite direct on 01539 531344 to book your stay.'

The sites own online booking system was operational this morning, so I can only assume they mean online booking via the CMC website/app is coming soon. I don't know of an Affiliated site that you can book through the CMC website, you normally have to book direct.

I guess the CMC may have decided to offer a different form of Affiliation where they staff and run a site on behalf of owners, instead of their normal modus operandi of leasing a site and turning it into a fully CMC styled operation. I guess the potential problem is that the site owners won't step away and will cause the CMC site staff a problem if they don't agree with how they run the place.

I think that’s pretty much what has been suggested here.😏

MUC, (Managed Under Contract) sites used to include some of the Racecourse sites, such as Fakenham, Wincanton, Market Rasen, possibly Exeter and Cheltenham. A long, long time ago (in a galaxy not that far away) these and others were part of the Trax network of Sites. A few still exist, Exeter certainly does. Staffed and managed on a day to day basis by the Club, but often there’s little in the way of capital investment to update and improve the visitor experience via new shower blocks, etc… I think some other Club Sites were MUC as well, possibly Nunnykirk, Threeways, but without deep research and old paper site books to refer to, I’m not sure. The Morris Leisure Sites are Affiliated.

This link lists the current Affiliated Sites, including the new one.

I suspect there are Club members who never showed any interest in that site for the last 20 years…maybe didn’t even know it existed… but now are thinking they will be able to go there. Brave decision. 🙂

Was the Braithwaite Fold site at Bowness not one of the MUC sites way back, I think the local council owned it?

We stayed there once with our previous van, there was a 7.5m length limit, so we could not go again as current van was too long. It was a cramped site, toilet block was poor then. I think the site is bigger now than it used to be.

Lower Wensleydale is a managed site :-

“Lower Wensleydale Club Campsite is set within the sheltered hollow of a disused quarry that is now overrun with a vast array of wild flowers, mosses and mature trees. This campsite based in North Yorkshire is managed by the Club on behalf of the owners and offers varied pitching areas, each one guaranteed to bring you that one step closer to the beauty of our country's natural”

It’s a very nice site but probably as a result of it’s managed status the facilities are not of the usual CAMC standard.

The main problem with the new site is that it is a long way from Bowness and will normally involve the use of a car. Google shows it as a 1hr 40 mins of a walk whilst the CCC site (our favourite) is a pleasant 10 min walk to the boats and the bus terminus.

@SteveL yes you are right, LW is another MUC site. We like it, lovely natural site, and a pleasant walk into Ledburn. The loo/shower blocks aren’t Clumber standard, but they are very good, always clean. We have camped in tents here as well a few times.

We also find the loo/shower block fine but you do hear a bit of moaning. However at £8.50 a night less than Hawes in June and good walking from the site it’s one of our favourites.

Same here @SteveL We might spend 10 mins a day in a facility block, that’s if we don’t use our onboard bathroom. Lovely little site, and a nicer ambience than Hawes. Love the ducks and bunnies all around. Mind, we have actually witnessed someone sweeping the bunny droppings umpteen times times a day off a pitch…….some folks are not really cut out for camping🤭😂
