As @DavidKlyne says... I think the answer is to source somewhere to fill locally before investing in a bottle. We have no problem here. Our local camping accessory shop - (where we purchased our bottles from -) sell LPG and fill the cylinders for you.... Jacksons of Arley, just outside Nuneaton. There are also other places, other than garages, which sell LPG.... independent building/ hardware suppliers (e.g. Carvers of Wolverhampton), gas suppliers (e.g. Birmingham Autogas, Tyseley, B'ham)... just a thought! There is a list somewhere of places that will fill Safefill bottles, I don't know how up-to-date it is..... it's called The Red Guide..??

More and more mainstream and supermarket fuel stations are no longer allowing that sort of free standing cylinder to be refilled.

Increasingly garage forecourts seem to be pulling out of supplying LPG, certainly that is the case here in MK. Probably the best idea would be to search locally where you can fill up so you are sure you can you can fill up as you either arrive home or leave home. Do motorway service stations still sell LPG?

There is a very useful app which helps you find the nearest LPG suppliers, MyLPG.EU

It works all over Europe, including the UK.

You need to look at the mylpg app and work out whether or not there are filling stations either near your home or in the places you are likely to visit. I am lucky, I suppose - I have a filling station about 20 mins drive from home and plenty around places we go to regularly. I've been using Safefill for about 10 years now - bought originally re reduce weight in the van but with our present one weight isn't an issue. That said, I must have saved a fortune on gas over those 10 years and recovered the cost of the cylinders many times over.

That's what I really wanted to know. I know that at least one of the supermarkets round here plus several of the petrol stations do sell LPG but I was wondering whether they actually let you fill freestanding cylinders. It's pointless having them if they don't.

Has anyone else had any problems being allowed to fill Safefill cylinders?

Morrisons have stopped allowing removable cylinders to be refilled but are thought to still allow the filling of fixed systems.

I've emailed Safefill and will post whatever they send back by way of reply on here.

So… quick reply from Safefill. The mylpg.eu website tells you whether filling of freestanding cylinders is allowed at outlets that sell LPG, so that's useful. I've looked it up and the information IS there.

Morrisons stopped allowing it in October 2025 apparently, but Safefill say that they're actively removing LPG from their forecourts anyway. (Morrisons that is, don't know whether that's true or not.)

Safefill advised me to use mylpg.eu to check outlets in my area before buying their product as 'some customers fail to do so and then find it difficult to fill'.

Thanks to all for helpful pointers.

It is estimated that there are around 100,000 cars using LPG as their main fuel so I suppose its understandable that places like supermarkets are ceasing to sell LPG? That number is likely to decrease year on year as apparently there are no incentives to switch over to that fuel type. The other side of that coin is that in recent years there has probably been an increase in the number of leisure vehicles using LPG for heating and cooking. However I suspect they don't really make up for the falling number of vehicles using it as their main fuel?

West Yorkshire. I've looked on the my LPG site and there seem to be a few petrol stations which sell LPG and also allow filling of free standing cylinders. If I decide to get a Safefill cylinder, I'll have to do a proper recce and double check that the info on mylpg is actually correct.

Since I started this thread I've been past a couple of Morrisons sites and they don't appear to be selling LPG any more as the price has disappeared from their signs out front.
