We have only stayed once and that was back in 2015. I seem to recall the site having an interesting history? There is a bus service to both Leek and Buxton albeit fairly irregular.

Good cycling (both road and mountain bike) and walking round there, and of course if you rock climb, the Roaches & Hen Cloud, plus not far away the High Peak and Tissington trails, plus again, rock climbing on limestone. We have used the site a couple of times, in spite of being pretty close in Chesterfield.

A tiered site as its set on a hillside. Our main interest whenever we've stayed there was to go walking at The Roaches, seen from the site. You can walk along the top and walk down to Ludd's Cave, a hideout for the band of locals that went around smashing and vandalising the new fangled machines brought to replace the working man and woman, hence the origin of Luddite. I always like a bit of history to accompany my walk. The Tea Room just below the ridge on the road is excellent and the views from it worth the drive to it alone.

As @wh1nbrew mentions there are good cycling routes in the area. The highest village pub in the Peak District at nearby Flash, on the way to Buxton. Leek itself has the usual supermarkets and is very much a market town. The Three Horseshoes pub opposite used to be used by a lot of members (of both clubs as the C&CC site is almost opposite the club site.) Not frequented it for a while so can't recommend.

We've stayed at Blackshaw Moor a few times. Our daughter used to live in one of the terraced houses on the right, just down the hill from the site (before she moved to the Outer Hebrides!!). A nice site within close proximity to the Roaches, and not too far from Leek. There's also Tittesworth Resevoir to visit. Sometimes used to go to Ye Olde Rock Inn at Upper Hulme. Really worth a visit (the site, and the pub... 😀😀)

Not sure the description above of Luds cave is correct. My understanding is that it was used by persecuted catholics called Lollards.

Nevertheless it is an interesting place to visit.

Leek Bar and Grill is also worth a visit
