2013 Bailey Orion 400-2 Whale space heater playing up. Works for a time then fault appears with 5 flashing LED. Neither gas nor electricity heating works. Resets eventually after twirling both knobs - thermostat & gas/electric switching.

Any ideas as to what’s going on!

First of all,I am not familiar with the Whale system you have in your van,but when you say the LED flashes 5 times ,this is the info you need to tell you on a fault list.

Sorry I cannot be of more help, but Whale do have an excellent technical department if you can ring them.

Google "Whale space heater 5 LEDs flashing" and you get this :

A flashing red light or "5 light fault" on a Whale space heater typically indicates a safety or ignition error that has caused the system to lock out. The specific fault can be identified using the control panel and usually requires a system reset.

Common Causes for the 5-LED FaultThe 5-LED fault on a Whale space heater (like the SL5512 model) is often associated with issues preventing proper operation, such as:

    • Ignition Failure: The system tried to ignite but did not detect a flame.
    • Gas Supply Issues: Blockages in the gas line or an empty gas bottle can trigger this error.
    • Poor Ventilation/Blocked Flues: Problems with the air intake or exhaust flue can cause a safety shutdown.
    • Low Battery Voltage: The fan and ignition system require sufficient 12V power to operate correctly; low voltage can cause a lockout.
    • Faulty Components: Issues with the flame sensor, ignition electrode, or internal sensors.

    How to Troubleshoot and Reset

    1. Perform a System Reset: The primary action to attempt is a system reset.
      • Turn the heater control switch from the 'on' position to 'off' and back 'on' again within 2.5 seconds.
      • Alternatively, turn the main control knob through its positions or switch the main 12V master switch for the entire system off for at least 10 seconds and then back on, then attempt the control panel reset again.
    2. Check Gas Supply:
      • Ensure all gas bottles are full and connected.
      • Verify that all gas taps (valves) for the heater and other appliances are fully open.
      • Check if other gas appliances (e.g., the hob) are working correctly to confirm gas flow.
    3. Inspect Flues and Vents:
      • Visually inspect the external inlet and exhaust flues for any physical blockages (e.g., insect nests, debris).
    4. Verify Power:
      • Ensure your leisure battery has sufficient charge, as the fan motor needs adequate power to run correctly, even on gas settings.

    Hope this helps.
