Touring sites in Wales

Good afternoon

My Wie and I have used our caravan in Cornwall, twice, south coast and recently spent three weeks in the Highlands in Fort William.
We would now like to visit Wales but have never been there,

We like beaches, sight seeing and some hiking and wonder whether go to the South, North or the lake district.
Has any one got views on this and could recommend some caravan sites.
Thank you everyone for any advice.
Phil.

I suggest Pembrokeshire area for beaches and also try the club site at Pembrey with access into the country park and miles of beach.

You could choose either North or South of Wales and fulfill your criteria. We live in the North bit so know more about it but have enjoyed coastal walking in Pembrokeshire, plus some fantastic scenery.

Northwards you'll find excellent beaches around Harlech and further north of there. Great walking as well as you are in easy reach of Eyiri (Snowdon) and the mountains or lower hills. Then again you could try Anglesey which has some great beaches, coastal path walks and lots of Dolmens and history. You are within reach of castles like Caernarfon and Conway and further south have Harlech and Criccieth castles.

Not sure what sort of campsites you usually stay on so let me know and I'll see if any fit

We live here and still enjoy North Wales for touring.

We quite liked Chirk, in North Wales, with easy walking access to the Llangollen Canal. Another site we liked in Wales was this one at Barmouth Hendre Mynach Touring and Camping Park which is near some lovely beaches.

@PhilDK there are hills aplenty in central Wales, so it really depends how on your hiking capabilities. There are quite a few mountains well over 3000ft and plenty more lower but worth the effort ascending.

Ask Santa to send you a copy. It will help you decide where to go, what to do and what to see.

Gŵyr (Gower) for beaches. First area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the UK. Stay at Gowerton CC site (a bit utilitarian, but it serves).

I know that many members like the Pembrey site. I find it utterly depressing. Sure, it’s on a beach, but there are nicer beaches in Wales, and Pembrey and Burry Port are desolation personified. (In my opinion of course.)

Cambrian Hills. An quiet area of mountains and lakes, small market towns, antique shops, and the home of Twm Siôn Cati. Stay at the C&CC site at Rhandirmwyn. Tucked away on the banks of the Tywi river it is a peaceful and very attractive site.

Wyeside C&CC site on of the banks on the Wye (clearly!) for easy access to The Elan Valley dams.

Pembrokeshire, as mentioned, of course (Coastal National Park). Both CAMC sites at Fresh East and St David’s (a misnomer; it’s miles outside the city) are more or less on the coastal footpath.

Ceredigion Coast. Just as lovely (if not lovelier) than Pembrokeshire (and I live near Fresh East!) but quieter. Stay at the C&CC site just outside Cei Newydd (New Quay) or CAMC at Shawsmead (a bit further inland but more or less in the Aeron Valley).

The site DK recommends near Abermaw (Barmouth) is in a good position. A quality site.

Once upon a long time ago, I lived in the Gogledd (North Wales). Anglesey is a holiday in itself. We like the CAMC minimum facility site, Cae Mawr.

Eryri needs no introduction really. Morris Leisure have terrific sites at Betws-y-Coed and Llanberis.

Don’t rule out the Llŷn, another AONB (now they are all called National Landscapes or something). The C&CC has a site at Llanystumdwy, birthplace of Lloyd George. It’s a bit sloping though. Very sloping actually. We put up with it for the location. But there are some good CLs and CSs in the area.

I have toured most of Wales over the years and was a regular visitor to the north, in fact I was there earlier this year. I have never been much of a fan of the Lake District, I think because it is just that little bit further away and has a reputation of being very busy and not so free and easy as other places. Places which stood out for me in Wales have been:

The Gower a lovely area with fabulous beaches and walking

St Davids, loved the peace and quiet we found there and Whitesands Bay

Snowdonia, ok it hasn't got any beaches and the area can be very busy, but it has to be one of the must visit places in Wales and a ride on the Welsh Highland Railway with a stop off at Beddgelert is a good way to see it. You could easily do the latter with a stay on the Llyn peninsular (Criccieth) for beaches which would also put you near the wonderful Italianate village of Portmeirion.

For site suggestions, other than those of the C&mC which will always stand you in good stead,, you would have to narrow down your intentions and post them here.

We have toured round most of Wales, North, South, Mid coastal, mid inland along the Borders. Fabulous and diverse countryside. It’s similar to Scotland in that you have to drive around mountains and through valleys. If you like history, then it has some of the best castles in the UK, glorious Abbeys, lovely big houses and gardens. Well trod famous walking paths, although respect and preparation required for the big mountains, they are challenging in Winter.

I would suggest choosing an area, and exploring properly, rather than racing around trying to do too much. The Club has some nice sites and CLs dotted all around, and we have never had any problems finding somewhere nice and interesting to stay, you just need to do your site choice homework. South has some stunning beaches, North has the best Castles, Anglesey, etc……. Sites we have used, Freshwater East (S), Beddgelert (Forestry Commission) in the North, plus dozens of good CLs. If you go South, don’t miss the walk to Barafundle Beach, via Bosherton Ponds.
