Is it just me or has anyone else had trouble understanding the dialogue from some of the actresses, especially Lola Petticrew as the youg Dolours Price. Most of the others I didn't have a problem with but Lola was the worst due to her rapid speach combined with the strong Irish accent. Chanel 4 has shown two episodes so far but I have watched them all on My 4 and thought it excellent even though I lost some of the dialogue.

I am 64 years old. This time last year I was experiencing a similar problem, especially with anything on HD TV, Netflix or American. The best description is I was hearing things but could not process what I was hearing.

My lovely wife "suggested" I get a hearing test. Less than 5 weeks after clearing my ears of wax I was supplied with NHS hearing aids. I had been diagnosed with slight/moderate high frequency hearing loss. This is where a lot of speech is and according to the hospital a conservative estimate of 70% of the population over 60 years old experience a problem. They either do not recognise they have a problem as hearing loss is gradual, or they simply refuse to accept the problem exists.

My advice for anybody experiencing similar is visit the doctor for advice. Do NOT go anywhere for a free hearing test as once you start the process the free service offered by the NHS will not be accessible.

Thanks for your comments @eribaMotters, not so sure it is my hearing because I don't struggle with the dialogue on the main stream channels although some American accents in films can be a challenge.

As an aside, "Say Nothing" is also available on Disney+ Hulu. For those that can remember the "Troubles" it is very hard hitting and will bring back memories.

I have recently been watching old episodes of Taggert from the beginning on Sky TV and the sound is far louder than on other programmes. The sound does vary a lot on different programmes and occasionally, it is so bad that you can hardly hear it at all.

It might just simply be the fact that you are not “tuned in” to the regional accent? We love Shetland, but do sometimes have to resort to subtitles, same as we do with some American stuff.

There have been a few programmes in the past where the production teams have got the sound completely wrong, often with background sounds drowning out the dialogue. Having said that most TV's do allow you to adjust the sound output which might improve the quality and make it more ear friendly.
