I would like to be better off, but that is not going to happen.

I'm not on a state pension yet, but I cannot figure out why the tax threshold is not now locked to the state pension.

I do not own an electric vehicle but will eventually. Tax per mile is a way of getting in the lost revenue from a lack in sales of petrol and diesel, but will take a couple of years? to set up. Why not tax per Kw used.

It would be possible to calculate this from commercial charge points as these are already metered. For home charge points a rolling system of meter installation on those chargers would be a pain, but surely not beyond reason. Such a system must be easier to administer and less open to fraud.

Bring back the old custom of keeping it totally secret until the Chancellor actually makes his speech!

Put a full stop to this endless daily speculation.

I used to enjoy them more when there wasn't all the details being leaked before hand. I suspect also the room to change things is pretty limited unless you were elected on those changes. From the hobby point of view the reintroduction inflation increases on fuel might impact some but I don't understand why it was every paused in the first place. Eventually it will become redundant as more move to EV's. At the risk of being shot down I quite like the idea of pay by mile as whilst that might make its more expensive for high mileage drivers many others it could save them money. Not sure how they are going to collect the data as some the ways I have seen mentioned seem a bit Heath Robinson?

I was wondering the aame thing @DavidKlyne . I guess they could do it somehow, through the MOT... but then they'd have to make the MOT (or whatever they decide to rename it???) applicable to all vehicles (even 'newer' cars) every year....??

There was alway an inevitability about electic vehicle having to pay something, as the income through car tax on petrol/ deisel vehicles was inevitably going to decline..

Some very rough maths from me to be corrected by others. Tax on 1L of fuel is around 53p I think, and will rise by 5p. If you average 45mpg I think it works out that you are paying 6p per mile in tax. 3p per mile for electric vehicles is a bargain.

I've been thinking about how you can prove your mileage, and as DSB says it could be along the lines of the MOT. Changes are underway with this due to fraud, so photographic evidence is being called upon at the time of the MOT. At the end of the year, reporting to an MOT station to verify mileage would seem a solution as a structure/system already exists that could be adapted. Only problem would be what about those of us who may cover 1/3rd of our yearly mileage abroad?

Since retirement, I tend to not get that excited about the budget anymore. I have come to the conclusion no budget/government (understandably) will tackle the big issues, national debt, tax and spending. Given all the hoohaa of recent weeks, I didn’t see anything particularly radical in the budget, much ado about nothing really , imv.

It’s just a shame the majority of MP’s can’t keep quiet while the chancellor is speaking. I did start off watching, but the constant heckling was very off putting and I quickly gave up.

I suppose its a question of interpretation. The Chancellor says there was a large hole in public revenue whilst the OBR says there was in fact a surplus of 4.2 billion. Whilst that sounds a lot of money, in the scheme of things its quite small but none the less a surplus. That 4.2 billion might not have been enough to pay for any spending plans so extra tax increases were I suppose inevitable? Whether its lying or political expediency I will leave others to judge but suspect that judgement will be down to where people sit politically?

We can’t really debate it on here, but it is worrying how much misinformation, biased reporting, dirt digging, governing by soundbite is happening.

Back in my days of working for local government, I recall our Council putting in place a ‘fit and proper’ test before anyone could stand as a local councillor, and it had to be completed retrospectively as well. Proper purge of those not fit to hold office, unable to understand what was required, able to debate rationally. Strikes me that this ought to be applied to those wanting to be elected as MP’s as well. I’ve seen better behaved herds of sheep☹️

I really don't know what all the noise is about, we all know the Government had to claw in money. As it stood, it could not fund the NHS, road repairs, triple lock pensions etc. The only debate is whether they should have spent more on the welfare bill. I have seen my tax bill go up by 33 percent over the last 5 years due to the freezing of the income tax allowance and it will get worse but as long as I see an improvement in services I can swallow the bitter pill. On balance I think it was the right budget for the times.

With any Budget there are always winners and losers and of course we all want to be winners? If you read the press you get the impression that pensioners are always the losers but that doesn't stand up to scrutiny. I have always paid tax on my pension but only in recent years has Margaret. But then you have to balance that against the Triple Lock increases in recent years that have actually been quite substantual, wish my occupational pension had kept up at the same rate! Like wise with the NHS if the speed at which Margaret got her second hip replacement came around I assume the extra money is starting to pay dividends? Perhaps we need a more Danish attitude towards Government spending, then everyone would feel happier?

Like Steve L I started watching it,and the noise from the floor, coupled with the ticker tape messages along the bottom of the screen not lining up with what RR was saying,I soon gave up watching.

Thought the deputy speaker done well though!

Complaints still brewing regarding misleading statements . I think she’s only said what the PM wanted her to say ,So the buck stops there.
