I probably shouldn't say this, but this sign caught me out as one I am not familiar with, I had to cheat by looking at my Sat Nav to tell me the speed limit for the road I was on.

Before I give an answer apart from "cheating" like I did, what speed would you do?

This is for an "A" road before entering an averaging speed camera section.I was towing a van at the time, and then solo for a couple of days.

Sign indicates National Speed Limit applies with enforcement via camera.

    Towing 50 MPH

    Solo 60 MPH

Assuming the road was a single lane then solo I wouldn't exceed 60 mph, towing 50 mph. As there is an upcoming Average speed section I would assume there may be a reduction up ahead.

Sign shows that the National speed limit applies. However, my sat nav only shows the speed limit for cars. The actual limit will depend on the type of road, dual (motorway / non motorway) or single carriageway and what vehicle you are driving / towing.

It’ll be the national speed limit for that particular road - not necessarily 70.

Thanks for all the replies, and yes I can see from answers on here, others are confused by this, including me.This is on the road A149,the main road leading to the Sandringham Club Site,my main reason was,if the speed limit is 60mph,why not have a sign indicating 60mph,I did notice further up the road coming into these signs, someone had stuck (or written) a 60mph notice on the National speed limit sign.

As for DaveCyn's point about the 10mph reduction, how do speed camera's fixed or average, determine if you are towing or solo.

As SteveL says my Sat Nav does not know I am towing.

At least it got me googling this sign trying to understand it myself!!

As previously stated it signifies the National Speed Limit applies.

Always remember though that the limit varies depending on the class of vehicle and it's beholding on the driver to be aware of the relevant speed limit applicable to the particular vehicle and the road it's currently on.

Further info in the Highway Code book.

If it was, as said in OP, an A road single carriage way 60mph and dual carriageway 70mph for cars. Other limits apply if towing, etc.

We do need to refresh ourselves on the highway code from time to time. I recently attended a very good talk by a driving instructor and am ashamed to say I got one of his questions wrong, we wrote our answers, on the colours of cats eyes on a motorway........

    @Fozzie

"if the speed limit is 60mph,why not have a sign indicating 60mph"

Because 60 mph signs (60 in a red circle) are only used on roads, such as dual carrigeways, where the national speed limits are lowered for safety - for example in road works. You would not ordinarily see a 60 mph sign on a single carriageway road because 60mph is already the default speed limit (for cars). That is to say, the national speed limit applies being the meaning of the sign on your picture (below the camera).
