Some might know this already but here is a heads up for those that don't. Aussuming your property is registered with the Land Registry (some older properties might not be?) They offer the facility to inform you if they have any enquiries about your property. There have been a number of cases where houses have been sold without the owner knowing anything about it because scammers have gathered information from the Land Registry. If you register an email account they will inform you of this type of activity which could save a lot of stress.

Thank you @davidklyne. A good reminder. I learnt of this a few years ago - when a house in Wales, owned by a vicar who worked in a different parish, found out the hard way. Often featured on various radio 4 promgrammes. Sorted in the end, but took a long time.…

Our house wasn't registered at the time, weve since moved, but when we moved we had to pay to register this one with Land Registry - took 18 months. So we are on this scheme. You get emails to confirm nothing happening, 6 monthly or annually too.

Note to anyone who has proper deeds, not Land Registry, ask to have your deeds returned when they've finished with them. Our solicitors forwarded ours once everything was registered. I understand Land Registery copy the deeds, before destroying the hard copies. I learnt whilst working in the record office that sometimes items are not noted, 2 pages turned at once?, boundaries were common issues, old maps don't show who owns what - only the deeds. So if you can have the originals it can save heartache....
