Awning too small. Just a thought.

I have just purchased a new to us 2016 Swift Challenger which is 1.2 mtrs longer than my last caravan. I have a real good full size awning which i used with the old caravan. Obviously it is too small for my new Swift. I have looked at having it made bigger but they won't add more than 1 mtr to the width. As new awnings are a lot of money and i already have a real good one is it possible to use my awning, fitting as normal to the front of the caravan but as a porch awning would fit to the back as it would be 1.2 mtrs to short. I would obviously have to cut the beading so it left the awning rail like a porch awning would. Would this work or is it wishful thinking.

I would love your thoughts please. Thanks

@davetom Yes we did this with our very very awning 26 years year ago with was given to us and the awning then was 10+ plus years old and yellow and faded. It won't be a perfect fit down that side and will let some wind in and some persistent rain in (porch awnings have a padded side to ensure a more snug fit) but it worked well enough most of the time.

You have nothing to lose apart from selling it and using that money to buy a new one or second hand one, but it's your choice.

I agree with Cornersteady regarding the fit, but why not sell it and buy the correct size. 2nd hand awnings are a fraction of the new price. You can pick up a lightly used one in excellent condition with many years of life left in it without problem.

I did not want a full length awning on the caravan I had in the 1980s so I fitted a length of awning channel vertically down about 2/3 of the way along. Suitably curved to follow the line of the factory channel at the rear and with a gap in to top part of the rail. I could then fit a shorter awning that was fully attached to the side of the van.

Thanks for your comments. I did just wonder if it would work. I probably will sell this one and get a awning which is the right size. It would be a shame to make a bodge of a nice setup. Thanks
