Has anyone had any experience with towing with one of these cars? Will it do what they say and tow 1.5ton?

@OurCoachmanAdventure what sort of engine does it have, fuel, capacity and hybrid type? Do you find it a bit revy going up hill at all?

My only experience of hybrids was a Toyota CRH which was painful up hill on a motorway even when solo, but I'll probably need to get a hybrid one day so would be interested.

If you are towing 2 tons with a Jaecoo J7 Hybrid you really should not be on the road as it is illegal with a towing capacity of 1500kg and a kerb weight well under 2 tons.

OCA didn't say what his gross train weight is, so how can you say he is definitely towing illegally? It might be unadvisable, but illegal?

I take your point Lutz however apart from insurance considerations I am not convinced towing almost half a ton more than the manufacturers towing limit would be considered legal.

Interestingly there is no reference to the gross train weight in the weights section of the owners handbook, it would be interesting to know what it is.

I think the only way to find the definitive answer on the GTW is to read the plate on the specific vehicle.

By exceeding the manufacturers recommended towing capacity, and that forming part of the vehicle's UK DVSA type approval, it is unlikely his insurance policy would cover him whilst towing in excess of this amount, and in the absence of having specifically checked and having evidence to support he is towing safely, he is arguably uninsured and therefore driving illegally. At best, most reasonably minded members would see this as extremely ill advised.

The DVSA doesn't conduct vehicle type approval. It's the job of the VCA. Besides, the V5c only shows the towing capacity under standard conditions, not necessarily the manufacturer's ultimate limit which may be greater, depending on the application. Consequently, the towing limit would only be constrained by the terms of the insurance policy, not directly by any legislation as such.
