Motorhome Wi-Fi

Hi, we are considering fitting an antenna to the roof of our motorhome so that we can improve the wi-fi signal we receive, allowing us better reception on our mobile phones and sat nav when travelling and a Smart TV when not.

We use the van in the UK and mainland Europe, staying mostly on CL's, sites or aires but occasionally go off-grid in Scotland.

We are not sure whether we should go 4G or 5G, whether anyone has used Motorhome Wi-Fi or Maxview, and what your experience has been.

Thanks for any recommendations.

Don't have any personal help sorry, but when this was asked last time I recall there are various videos on youtube about this.

By the way you can change your name to something easier.

I assume you refer to being able to improve and pick up a mobile phone signal and feed it into a WiFi router rather than a WiFi aerail? I use a TP link mobile WiFi router connected to a Poynting aerial. Other solutions are available. Avtex do one designed for the caravan market. It has been discussed many times on here and if you use the search facility at the top of the home page with terms like "mobile phone aerial" or "mobile WiFi router" it will bring up many discussions on the subject.

I didn't respond to the above immediately because I was unsure of the status of 4 and 5g. I googled it and it looks like 4g is here to stay for at least another decade so I would be looking for a system compatible with both 4 and 5g. Looking at the Avtex systems, I would consider the >AMR104X< Its compatible with all current mobile signals and is dual sim giving choice of two service providers, If anyone has one of these I would also be interested in user experiences as a streaming device to replace terrestial TV reception.

We had an Avtex AMR985 fitted a few years ago. The roof aerial is 5g ready but the router is only 4g. Speed is fine on 4g, the smart tv works fine and the router can be upgraded fairly easily as it's inside a locker. We're really happy with it.

We paid less that £400 for the setup, I found out later that newer models were launched a few months later, hence the lower price. At least 4g should use less data than 5g!

Found >this video< on U-Tube and you can also download the manuals off the >Avtex web site< for more information.

I have for a while now used a duel sim router and 5G Antenna. This way you can have to networks and the router switches to the best signal… The Antenna, I have mounted on the caravan roof and the boost it provides is really good. I have a 3 sim on ID mobile and a 5G EE data sim, works well on all areas of the Lake District and North Wales.

Regarding 4G or 5G I would have thought going for 5G gives you an element of future proofing? If you have a good 4G signal it will pronably do all you want it to but networks don't seem to charge extra for 5G (which also include 4G) so it gives you a bit more flexibility.

5G gives you more bandwidth to be able to have your TV streaming as well as using your tablet/laptop on the internet. I have found certain streaming providers only work properly when I have been using 5G. You tube is fine as it auto adjusts to your speed. Netflix too but Disney simply stops playing if the speed gets too slow… Not good if you have a little one wanting Stich on tv….😐️

The router I have put the link above dues tell you what network level the sim is connected too as well. Blue to 5G and purple is 4G…

Might be worth a look at Honest Mobile, especially if you have a single sim router. Their smart sim uses any network and roaming is free. However, I don't think they allow streaming of TV?

Hi @ScreenNameC1E2BB9DA6 hopefully the recommendations and advice shared by other members has been helpful. We also have the Avtex WiFi for caravan and motorhomes available on the Club Shop at a discount for our Club members. 😊

Seeing "5G" on a device's display is simply an indication that 5G is available. It does not mean that it is being used. Communication may well still be on 4G.

@Navigateur I understand that but the router I use "Cudy P5" does in fact state what network you are connected too. It states it on the front of the unit as well as the dashboard. With it being dual sim you can set to auto so that it will switch to the strongest signal either 4G or 5G if its available where you are…
