Britstops
There are now many other websites giving information about pub stopovers (and others) without a subscription that it hardly seems worthwhile renewing a long lapsed Britstops’ membership – even with the discount they keep offering me to re-join.
If you still use the scheme, what are the advantages?

I'm aware it changed hands from the orignal owner who set it all up. I not aware of any changes made as a result other than there is no longer a printed handbook, it all being available on an App now. Sometime ago, before the change of ownership, I had membership for one year but found that too many stop overs were located with pubs and were for small vans. I cannot imagine that has changed and as you say for many stop overs you do not need any membership.

We joined when it was fairly new, and very cheap. Still got our original handbook, which is useful at times. There are lots more pubs doing stopovers now, without any kind of membership. So not worth re joining. Other Apps give lots of details about overnight stops, park ups, etc….. with reviews as well.

Thank you both. I was wondering if I am missing some 'hidden gems' as it were, but you have confirmed what I thought: it’s not worth taking out a subscription, even with the discount I am being offered to entice me back.0

Touring world has moved on a lot since we first joined, but having that first paid for “places directory” was very useful. It was only cheap when we joined, but no one ever asked about Membership, or wanted to see we had paid, so we never paid again. Lots of pubs, nice ones in pretty locations with big car parks, here in South Yorks/NE Derbyshire are offering overnight stops if you have a drink or a meal, without any strings. I have even asked if it’s possible to overnight in a few that don’t advertise, and the the usual response has been positive. It’s not for everyone, but we are self contained, we don’t need loos, showers, staff, wifi is via tethering, we carry everything we need to keep warm and comfortable. Some do have extras.
Visitors looking for such a stop could try The Fox House on edge of Longshaw Estate (NT), The Millstone close to Hathersage, The Ladybower Inn close to Ladybower and Derwent Valley walks. I suspect most of the pubs between Dore and Castleton would let you overnight if you politely enquired. Car parks are private of course, so permission must be sought.
