Souvlaki in Athens, simple fresh fruit (Oranges, Lemons, Figs) picked from the trees in Glyfada.

Closer to home, fresh seafood like Crab in Norfolk, fish bought on the quayside in Newlyn, stopping off and buying from outside local homes for things like Lemon Curd, freshly made jam.

For a hot beach snack, it was hard to beat the NT Beach hut Cafe at Chapel Porth, a Croque Rosemary followed by a Hedgehog! (Cornish Ice cream, covered with clotted cream, then rolled in toasted hazlenuts…..divine!)

We used to seek out Cider made on local farms when in Cornwall. Our all time favourite was a tiny little place near Bodinnick, a hamlet called Lower Penpoll. You could buy cider from the barrel, and if you dropped lucky, the farmer might have some “special” that had been matured in barrels that had formerly been used for Rum. The advice was never to drive after a glass of this though🤣

Croque Rosemary above. Lightly toasted baguette, mushrooms fried in garlic butter with plenty of chopped rosemary, add single cream, delicious West Country cheddar cheese melted on on top, grab a large bib and enjoy🤣

2004 - we where sitting on a lovely sandy horse shoe bay beach north of Jard Sur Mer on the west coast of France. We hadn't planned to stay long but found it so nice we thought we'd risk the beach side food shack. We had lovely mozzarella, tomato and basil baguettes drizzled with fresh lemon. We followed up with freshly cooked churros and chocolate.

2017 - camping at Church farm Cottages CL in Norfolk, north of Cromer we collected fish and chips from the East Runton fish and chip shop, Will's Plaice.

Any year from 2000 to the present, I've lost track of the many excellent Plat Du Jour we have enjoyed at the small French restaurants and Routierres.

Well over £100 a bottle at smart London wine merchants now, but ten years ago before it became famous we used to fill plastic bottles for just a few euros in the cellar at the chateau at Sarrians.

I think anywhere one travels, be it home or abroad, there are always fantastic meals to be had, I can't really single out one or even list a few. If pushed I suppose I could single out countries, best pasta and pizza is in Italy, while best fish and chips in England, and yes I do equate the two!

And of course being away with family and friends makes any meal special.

Wherever we travelled when abroad we always made sure to eat local and 9 times out of 10 we really enjoyed the food and drink but honourable mentions go to Oysters on the French Atlantic coast, cider in Brittany with a crepe, Costieres de Nîmes from the region around Nîmes from the vineyard itself, Sauerkraut in Alsace,Pastries from a decent French Boulangerie, Cured meats from Spain but the one treat I used to look forward to most was my first Ham Baguette, until the day my body rebelled and I couldn't eat Wheat.

France just doesn't do Coeliac foods, not for eating out purposes and the joy of doing so was gone. Still, the memories linger.

In the UK one of my favourite stops is at Brancaster Staithe in Norfolk where The Crab Hut provide wonderful Crab or Crayfish Tail to put in our own Paninis. All fresh and caught by the owners of the Takeaway hut.
