Hi
Please can you advise what paperwork should you get when purchasing a 2nd hand caravan?

There’s no hard and fast rule. Obviously, a receipt and I would expect to receive evidence of servicing and all the instruction books/manuals. If there’s a warranty, you should have the paperwork for that and also any CRIS documents. It’s not the same as buying a car and there is no legal transfer/registration of ownership.

If it's a non UK van then it will probably not be CRIS registered. Previous proof of insurance could also be useful as it shows history of ownership.

Never heard of anyone asking to see insurance before. It would prove nothing as insurance isn’t compulsory and it would not prove ownership.

I’m not sure how I’d react if someone asked for old insurance docs and, anyway, who keeps stuff for more than a year or so🤷🏻‍♂️

True, insurance is not compulsory, but it's a pretty good indicator that you own a van if you have been insuring it for several years.

Insurance companies e-mail everything to you and I keep my documents on the computer and tablet, just printing off the odd piece of paper. I'm not a tech nut, but I can put my hands on insurance folders going back 10 years or so for the caravan and I'd expect a lot of other owners are in the same position.

If buying from a dealer then they are unlikely to have owners insurance documents to hand. If it is a fairly newish second hand I would expect to see service documents, all manuals, any warranty documents that still apply plus latest gas test certificate, CRIS docs. I'd also take a damp test myself before buying and want to see all items fully functional.

Must admit TW that I've probably got insurance docs somewhere on the system for the last few years. I don't purposely save them but I'm a bit lax in deleting them.😀

My insurance documents have my details on them, not sure, actually totally sure, I wouldn't want those passing on? And also one wouldn't do that for a car?

As said above service history is far important and shows more.

If I bought a second hand caravan privately I would only want a paper trail to show me that it hadn’t been previously stolen

Don't worry, I would not dream of passing them on, but I would show them if asked as a form of proof.

@eribaMotters I wasn't actually worrying about it for you but again for me I'm not sure what it would prove to the quality of the caravan?
