Ypres, Arras, Albert, Peronne, Verdun. All horrific and tragic.

Many years ago we spent a week exploring the Somme battlefields and found Major & Mrs Holts Battlefield Guide to the Somme invaluable. It’s still published and an updated version comes up if you put the book title into Amazon. There is even a kindle addition.

A good place to start is the WW1 museum in Peronne. It will give you a feel of not only the background to the war but also those involved and its great battles.

Pete, There is no way you can see everything about WW1. The western front line between the opposing armies stretched for 700km.from the coast of Belgium to the Swiss border. And in the Alps tnere were the most amazing high level military sites between Austria and Italy at places which you might think to be impossible, yet they hauled big guns up there.

No, I will stick to France and Belgium as heading down to the south of France after. Mind, the Alps would be a good trip for another time..Thanks
