Steamer Quay Totnes

hi just spent 5 nights at Steamer quay here are my observations,
The site is to say at the least very compact as others have said, it is disappointing that there are no awning pitches on the site.
The toilet and shower facilities are good but busy as they are limited ( two showers ) in gents.
The site appears to be geared for motorhomes the biggest issue for caravans is that you cannot drive around the site without exiting the site driving back down the road to the roundabout at the bottom of the high street, around the roundabout back up the road and back into the site. Who ever designed this has never been in a caravan or spent time on a club site as Victor would say I don’t believe it.
The site roads are also very narrow with short pitches so a motor mover was required to get the caravan in and out.
The pay electric was very easy, I had already registered and put £20 on the meter, to assign to your pitch etc was simple but of course you need a phone or iPad etc.
We used approx £2 a day we used our own shower etc so heated water each day using electric, ran the fridge on electric, used air fryer a few times and microwave and ran the alde heating on electric when needed. So not too bad.
A good innovation was the laundry room machines were run via payment on your debit card so no trying to find a warden to get tokens.
great idea.
Will definitely come again hope the drive around can be sorted.

It’s possibly the first time the Club has researched and radically redesigned a site in the last 30 years. The growth in MH ownership, and the ownership take up of MH’s by Club Members who want to stay close to a town has probably been a large factor in the changes. At least it’s still on the network, and probably proving very popular, sounds like the kind of changes many Members have asked for in the last few years.

Sounds as though walking the site to choose a pitch might be the answer instead of driving around in the time-honoured way.

but how many Club sites, if any, have a suitable parking area
@MikeyB Well quite a few actually AG, but it's usually labelled the late night arrival area. not all sites have them but I can think of at least 10 off the top of my head. They are big enough to take three or four caravan units and they are sometimes used as an overflow for new arrivals during busy times.
Additionally some sites are quite large and to walk around would take some time, I did actually time myself (with the kids once) at TH and it took 14 minutes to cover all the site roads. Meanwhile your outfit might be causing some congestion if everyone had to walk around? Also I would suspect it's not what members who actually use sites want AG? Especially when it's raining and your pies will get soggy!

Have you visited this site? It looks as if there’s some space and anyway it won’t take long as the warden will tell you which pitches are vacant👍🏻.
Long time, no see. Been away again?😎

I have visited the site and space is VERY tight. I was concerned just parking my car up so I could have a walk around.

Which I’m sure was no surprise to you😉.

I’d say let’s not kid ourselves and think this is anything more than a site aimed more at MH owners, but being the Club, it does welcome caravans as well, as it should. Smaller pitches, edge of town, some features that don’t require staff help, easy stroll into town. MH heaven for some, but traditional caravan users, with larger outfits, requiring awning use need to be aware that this is not your run of the mill Club Site, and needs a bit of thought. There are other Club Sites not far away if you need more space, easier access and Totnes is the lure, we usually stay at Exeter Racecourse (or there’s Stover Country Park) and drive into Totnes for day. Research and prioritising needs before staying is the best option, do I want to drive? Do I need an awning? It’s the closest thing the Club has to an Aire type site, albeit at Club prices. Some compromises may be required, that’s all.

And there’s MH overnight parking allowed in the Longmarsh car park just yards from the gate. It’s cheaper and fine if you like that sort of thing with the boy racers coming to visit.
Stover wins for me every time👍🏻

Yep, Stover very nice, Trago over the road. We liked Exeter for cycling, and always did Totnes as a day out. Lovely town, but at most there’s a couple of days of interest there for us, with the Castle and the town. Anything beyond that and we would be driving out to other places, so two nights max at SQ. I think the Club have bought another big site further down A38 unless I am mistaken? Big holiday park?

CAMC took over Dornafield site which isn’t far away, if I remember rightly.

That’s the one👍 I couldn’t recall name. Quite a few Club options in area, so something to suit everyone and every budget. I was wondering if MH/campers could use a roll out canopy (no sides) at SQ. Would fit where a tow car would be on a pitch, or are they smaller pitches I wonder🤔
