Hi, we are brand new to caravanning and are looking into the best value storage and insurance and what you all think we need to insure, equipment, personal items etc. Any advice would be most welcome and also any firms to avoid.
Many thanks in advance. Michael

@Michaeldd - you ask about "best value" storage and insurance. Can't help with storage but, although I know I'm stating the obvious, "best value" doesn't equate to "cheapest" when it comes to insurance. What really matters is how they perform when you need them and have to make a claim. Please look at reviews before committing yourself - and not about how easy it was to arrange on-line, or how helpful the sales person was in helping you to select a policy - look at those who report their claims experience. There is often a vast difference!

I insure with this Club. They are certainly NOT the cheapest, by any means - but having made a claim some years ago, the whole experience was excellent, speedy and carried out with my interests at the forefront of everything that was done. I'm not saying that there aren't others out there who would perform as well - but on my part, I feel more than secure leaving the insurance of my van with CAMC.

insurance is usually for the van, contents and personal items, I don't insure the personal bit as that's covered on my home insurance. I don't have the dearest but I don't have the cheapest either, however I do compare each year.

With the storage , I had the same one for years , then I moved a few hundred miles so I had to find one double quick. There wasn't a lot of choice so we looked at a couple and the first one sounded great but it was at the back of a farm and they brought the cows in across the road leading to the storage , so that put me right off. The next one was ideal and once we were in the site was full. It has a toilet and we drive in instead of reversing the caravan, it also has water for cleaning the van. They have a lot of rules re. the security of the site , which suits me

Welcome to our great hobby and CT. Lots of knowledge here, just ask.

Choice secure storage, won't be cheap sadly. CASSOA gold is the highest, best insurance discount. The club offers storage at some sites. Check out entry and exit times and methods, not everywhere is 24/7. Important if you can't park by your house, thus you can plan your outings and returns.

With regard to insurance a good reputable company. As with any insurance you need good cover should you need to claim. That doesn't come cheap! But a few 10's could be worth thousands.

can’t help with storage, as we have always stored our outfits at home. But in terms of insurance, a good starting point would be to read the advice page, and questions to ask on the Club Website. Go to the home page and click on “Insurance” at the top. Some good advice on there around lots of issues. Some people swear by the Club insurance, and that of the C&CC, but others have got better deals elsewhere. As with most insurance, it can be a minefield at times.

Why not check out CAMC's cover as a starting point? Reading the policy will give you a good idea of what you need to insure. Your personal possessions might be covered under your household insurance while away from home.

Btw, I’ve reported the duplicate thread so it might be removed🤷🏻‍♂️

The type of storage, it's level of security (from ungraded, silver, gold, and the highest Platinum), and prices will depend on your location and it's been discussed before that storage prices are higher certain areas than others for the same facilities/security. I recall vast differences in price but you will be stuck with the prices for your area.

As @Bakers2 says but also take into account the distance from your home to storage, and all things being equal that's probably the most important factor. A site a few miles away, or ten minutes one way might be better than a cheaper one further out when you want to visit to pack or restock the caravan and just generally visit as well as when going away and coming back.

Other things to consider are other 'non essential' facilities like a washing area, some will wash your outfit for a fee, charging points, water. Actually what we find really useful are toilets to use before and especially after a long drive.

Some storage will have their own rules about things like not letting you take or put back the caravan into it's bay (but will let you use a motor-mover) and what security devices to use in addition to what your insurance requires.

We use the club's cover and there have been favourable reviews of the service on here down the years but as always check on prices and what is covered and things you have to do or have - like a yearly service and various hitch locks or wheel clamps. You might get discounts for using security devices and/or trackers and COSSOA sites. You may also want to insure the extra equipment you carry like aquarolls, wastemasters…and anything you keep in the caravan. Check that some personal items are not already covered under your travel and/or home insurance or you might be paying twice, but you may not have any choice. And of course the excess just like in car insurance.

If your caravan is new then you may wish to consider 'new for old' insurance.

    Enjoy your caravan.
