Hi everyone, I'm going abroad for the first time next week - heading to France on the ferry from Dover to Calais with Irish Ferries and just looking for any advice anyone can give with regards to the crossing.

Not much advice to be given really apart from common sense ones. Make sure you have all the relevant paperwork with you including current passport/s, have sorted out your insurance needs etc.

Take your time, arrive early for your crossing and enjoy. Make sure you can get to your first site in good time and don’t try to drive too far each day. 250 miles is enough for us. Leave enough time to shop for dairy and meat and other essentials if you want them. You cannot legally take dairy and meat into France from this country. Some ignore this rule, we prefer to obey the law.
Obvious I suppose, but when pulling out on ordinary roads, make sure you drive on the left. It’s VERY easy to get it wrong. Don’t hurry, give way to competing traffic, be patient. Don’t drink and drive, you’ll need 100% of your faculties.

Enjoy the lovely French roads, fewer potholes, better service areas… have a lovely trip.
