Hi All,

I thought I would share this info being as it's taken quite a while to figure out with the help of Nissan UK.

Nissan don't publish their towing weights in the current X-Trail manual, nor is it on the V5C, it is only in the brochure .

Which, for my version (5 seat, E-power, E-4orce) is advertised at 1,800kg. Which is also the figure advertised by reviews.

I however happened to look at my VIN which is how you work out the legal max towing weight of the vehicle to see if it matched. It does not. My MAM is 2,345kg and my gross train weight is 3,995kg. That gave a max trailer weight of 1,650kg.

Thinking my V5C was wrong, after asking Nissan to issue a Certificate of Conformity they turned out to be correct. As is the advertised max trailer weight.

Therefore, the current X-Trail can tow 1,800kg but can only do this legally IF the car is 150kg lower than its MAM at the time…OR… if the X-Trail is at or close to it's MAM then it is limited to a trailer weight of 1,650kg.

Thought that might be of interest to everyone.

Ta

Andy

This sounds a little like a Renault I used to own. The max towing weight had to be reduced by the weight of the cars occupants, even though the max train weight had not been reached.

Subtracting the maximum allowable mass of the towing vehicle from its permissible gross train weight does not automatically give you the towing capacity. It's only valid if the towing vehicle is fully laden to its limit. Besides, towing capacity is not the permissible MTPLM of the caravan either, but only its axle load because that's how towing capacity is defined.
However, one can always make full use of the gross train weight. There is no need to reduce the car's weight below its maximum allowable mass so long as the gross train weight is not exceeded.

Complicated . It all reminds me of our various flights from Lands End to the Scilly Isles on the 8 seater planes. They have a maximum load of approx. 1000 kg. so a lot less than the limit given already for the Nissan x trail. But passengers sitting side by side on the plane have to be individually weighed and moved to balance their weight with that of the person beside them.
But those members who are committed only to caravan holidays and never go anywhere else miss a wonderful group of islands.

I think the idea is that you will never have both the car and trailer loaded to their maximum, so this gives some leeway if one is a bit over.

It is certainly something you get with French cars.
