Clever Crow

For about the fourth year in a row we have a clever neighbourhood crow. Whenever the weather gets very dry he visits the bird bath in our garden and brings with him half a slice of bread which he dunks in the water. Whether it's for young ones I don't know but he carries most of it off again when suitably softened.

Crows are fascinating creatures. We watch them hanging upside down on the telegraph wires that run across the field behind us. They seem to be having a contest as to who can hang on the longest.

@TimboC of course to them you're the ones upside down, so they're probably thinking the same about you😊

We have a family of Jays in the woods behind our garden, they and before them their ancestors have been visiting our garden for 40 years now. They have all learnt to take bread from the bird table and then dunk it in the bird Bath before taking off with it. The only problem is that it leaves the bird Bath rather messy.

In my childhood I had a friend who tamed a young jackdaw. As an adult the bird was allowed to wild roam free but all ways came home to roost. The bird had many tricks including being able to repeat sounds and words and the bond between bird and human was strong. His brother also had a pet starling (closely related to the Mynahs) which had a far better range of learnt sounds and words but tended to do its own thing. What they did would be seen as cruel and illegal in todays eyes but they loved their lifelong ‘pets’. Thankfully times have changed.
