Siting my tourer at home
I have a blocked paved drive. At the side is a shale area which underneath has a weed control membrane and then compacted mud. Do you think I can store my van on that? I would only be moving it on a motor mover in relatively dry conditions ( April to Sept). It’s 1600 kilos and I think I’ll put a pneumatic jockey wheel on it. Thanks in anticipation.

It might depend whether its a firm or loose surface. The pneumatic jockey wheel will be a help as a conventional one would probably dig into the surface. Its a difficult question to answer without more knowledge of the surface, Ideally a couple of paved runways for the caravan wheels would help.

It should work as I see it. At one time we kept our caravan on the back lawn without problem. You do have to move it from time to time but the lawn never suffered and it did not sink into the lawn. We later used the drive which had two slab sections for the wheels and granite chips over the rest. The jockey wheel could stick in them if we used a motor mover but we never got stuck. A wider wheel should help though.
If the wheels do look like sinking possibly a couple of slabs would help.

Hi Clive, I’m afraid none of us have the slightest idea of how firm your compacted mud is, what the subsoil is, and whether it drains well or badly - so we can’t can’t possibly give you any sensible advice. Sorry

the soil is solid. It has had a membrane and about 2 inch of stone over it for the last 15 years. I think as we all use sites with grass pitches in the summer with our motor movers ill take a chance…
