@richardandros Sadly that’s what happens when previously registered domains are allowed to lapse and highlights the importance of having a responsible third party to manage them for you. Opportunist cybersquatters employ automated tools to seek out previously used domains that have lapsed and then acquire them at very little cost but then offer them for sale usually back to the original registrant. It seems to be much more common with US registrars managing .com and other US top level domains. The Wild West is still very much alive it seems. It is why it’s really important for domain registrants to set up renewal reminders in their calendars.
I used to manage domain names for clients and in my time deliberately let domain names lapse, usually because the domain was of no further use. Almost every time I did this with a .com domain I would be contacted by someone offering it back to me (as I was usually the registrant named on the domain record) for ridiculous sums of money.0 -

@hostahousey I know the feeling! What you could do is set up a gmail account and use that for any new contacts and at your leisure change existing contacts over to the gmail account. Eventually that would mean that in the future you were a free agent as far as your BTinternet email address was concerned.

yes good idea David . Will possibly try that, it will mean staying with my present provider for the near future..

My more immediate concern at the moment is what happens when our landline is no longer supported and that could be sometime this year as BT have recently installed FTTP to our area. I am currently with Plusnet but for some reason BT (Their parent company) have decided that they will only provide internet services not VOIP. I could just swap to BT which would safeguard both my email address and my phone number. Keen to keep the latter as its three sets of double digits. One option is to use a third party VOIP provider but I worry about how long they might stay in business or change their business model. If I did follow that option and stayed with Plusnet for high speed internet at least my BTinternet email address would be safeguarded.

@DavidKlyne We have VOIP with Vonage and pay £16 a month. We’ve been with them several years and had no issues. There are probably cheaper alternatives but I can’t really face the hassle of changing. We keep the landline phone number as some businesses use it as a point of contact, but most use the mobile numbers. If there is a power cut it goes off as it’s connected to the mains.
As an enticement we got a £50 Amazon voucher when we signed up. I spent it on a very expensive bottle of Gin.1
