Who tows with a Mazda CX5?

Hello there,
I am looking to purchase a 2022 Mazda MX5 either 2.0 petrol or a 2.2 ltr diesel. My Caravan is a 2005 Bailey Pageant Provence 5 birth and the caravan has a weight of MTPLM of 1420kg and MIRO of 1206kg. I have looked on the club site for matching the two and the diesel one is the better option. I am wondering if anyone has a 2022/2023 Cx5 and what it is like towing with it.
Thank you. Gary.

Mazda themselves say MX5 not designed for towing. Read what the manufacturer says. The CX5 is different. Which are you buying?

We have a CX5 petrol. It tows fine but it lacks torque and if I realised the level might have had second thoughts. I had 3 Mazda 6's before this the last with the petrol engine and all were no problem towing and best of all absolutely no problems with the car other then the last one had the rear brake discs rust badly and this one looks to be going the same way.
Mazdas are almost totally reliable, economical and reasonably comfortable. I would suggest the diesel models are better for towing with better torque as long as you are prepared to accept a diesel in the current climate.

We tow with a CX5 diesel 2.2 purchased in 2021. Our caravan is a Fendt 450 - what can I say - it is stable at all French motorway speeds, goes up hill and down dale and gives reasonable fuel economy when my wife isn't clogging it. (I only ever tow in reverse gear to put it on the designated pitch).
As good as our Citroen C5 diesels previously owned

I had a CX5 on my short list for when it comes to renewal. I know the diesel is an excellent tow car, but the 2.0L petrol is sadly lacking in torque.
Mazda are bringing out an updated model, towards the end of 2025 or early 2026. This has a new petrol engine with increased torque, but actual figures are not yet available.

I’ve had 2 Mazdas in the past (from new) and both were excellent in terms of reliability. Apart from normal running costs (service, tyres etc) nothing went wrong. When we got rid of the Mazda 2, it had completed over 100,000 miles. The only reason I didn’t go for the CX5 was that the ‘numbers’ weren’t quite right for the caravan I was planning on buying at the time, otherwise I wouldn’t have hesitated.
