New Bergerac

Anyone else watched this? We stuck it out to the end, but have to say we were rather underwhelmed on a number of levels. Doubt we would tune in for a second series.

I think part of the issue is any new series is getting to know the characters. The story line was fine, but it was dragged out for too many episodes and lost any momentum it was building up.

I have not seen the new series although I think Margaret has. It is a problem with remakes when you have seen the original, you can't help comparing. Its like Van Der Valk and All Creatures Great and Small. Although I have to say I think Channel 5 have done a good job with their version. Maybe that is the advantage of Doctor Who, you just change the main character?

We were bored by most of it to be honest, stuck it out to see if it improved but it was a dirge in places, and the script was poor, not helped by the main characters being utterly without any humour. Philip Glenister and Zoe Wanamaker did their best, but we had clocked the killer half way into first episode. Volume was on full as well to cope with all the whispering. Enjoyed seeing the car again though.

Nearly switched off after about 15 minutes. The sound was terrible with slurred words to the point we simply could not make out what his daughter was saying. Hackneyed plot with that old idea of the investigating officer being an idiot hating the hero and our hero interrupting and interfering beyond his remit to to what we assume will be him saving the day. We did leave it on but not sure if we will bother with he rest. Bergerac was not a sympathetic hero but a big headed drunk and way beyond anything sensible and believable.

I did enjoy the original series, very much of its period nowadays. Seen John Nettles on stage, now he really is a good actor, better in theatre than on TV.
