Buying a TV

we have never had a TV in our caravan, although it has some fancy aerial on the top. It’s a Swift Conqueror 580 2018. We have always propped up the iPad and the there’d it to one of our phones. I have no idea what TV to get, we do around 20 nights a year so nothing too expensive. Any advice would be welcome, and also does it just plug in and go or do I have to hook it up somehow?

Thanks in anticipation. Clive and Bec

If you use EHU then any TV such as a supermarket cheapy will do. Otherwise you need a set that runs off 12v. In either case, just plug and play via the appropriate 230v or 12v socket and connect the aerial.

Yep, provided you run on 240v, any tv will do. Just plug and play. Don’t forget to turn on the signal booster 👍

As above, but the problem may be getting something small enough as everything now seems to have gone the larger the better.

I bought one of the excellent dual voltage Avtex with built in sat tuner some years ago as the 2nd hand price was attractive and it would power up the Avtex aerial. If I was replacing it now it would be a small standard 240v TV.

We had an Avtex combi TV in our motorhomes. One reason was that it also had a satellite receiver which we used with our automatic dish. Whilst they are fine televisions if you are never going to need 12v operation then you can get a pretty decent 230v alternative at about a third of the price. We have one of these in our dining room at home which has a pretty good picture and it is viewed on the skew from where I sit so should be ok in a caravan.

Basically all you need to know is the size you want and if there is room for it. Assuming you are only going to use it on a hook up, any model that has Free view will work, provided there is decent reception. Some sites in remote areas might not get Free view but most club sites and many others in that sort of location will have a connection in the hook up to get the transmission, which will require a long cable.

We have kept the packaging and travel with the set in this to protect it from the travel bumps. Others put it in with pillows or cushions for the same reason.

I went for the Avtex that has a combined DVD unit and use a Firestick to make it the TV Smart. My thinking was if I was every pitched up with no phone, signal, no WiFi signal I could still watch a DVD.

we got our first TV from amazon, there’s lots of reasonable priced ones on there with 12v, but if you run on EHU then any regular one is fine.

We’ve had both and must say the regular one didn’t seem to enjoy the constant movement, putting out / away.

Whereas our current one which is designed for travel/12v is doing well.

I don’t think you can go wrong tbh it’s what works for you. 😁

As @TheCaravanningMummy points out travel TVs (12V) are usually built more robustly than those for use in the home.

The only 12v TV we ever used in our vans was the Avtex I mentioned above. Otherwise I have always tended to buy proper brands, including a Samsung and a Hitachi both which stood the rigors of thousands of miles of towing and motorhoming and came to no harm. When the Avtex replaced them they still gave years of service in the house. The only reason they were eventually retired was due to us wanting a slightly larger TV and one capable of being "Smart". I have also taken the view that if I am going to watch TV in the van I want the quality of the picture to be as high I as have at home.

We bought a cheap one but found the audio was not up to much so we but bought an Avtex TV/CD which was on offer and came with a free case at the NEC show in fact we are just off to the show now and this time we are not spending anything 🤞

Ours came from the nearest Tesco, bought when the previous one failed on site. It is well over ten years old and still going strong.
