I understand it was designed that way. I don't know whether having awning pitches would have meant less pitches? Perhaps the Club envisaged that the site would be used for more short stays when perhaps awning are less likely to be used?

thanks for the reply, might have to look at another site then, two kids in tow means we need the extra space. 😂

I had a look around the site late last year as we visit Totnes each week. The pitches are small and you are packed in. It gives the impression of designed for motorhomes/campers.

The club has a site about 10 miles north outside Newton Abbot, but I do not know what it is like.

Before moving to Devon we used to stay at this CL north of Totnes, closer to Buckfastleigh.

Smallcombe Farm CL | Caravan and Motorhome Club

You will have lots of space, electric hook up, internet, shared water taps, basic but good clean shower and loos in tiny individual porta cabin type boxes. The view across to the east is very nice but a tad windy at times.

I would happily stay there again.

A CL also worth considering, near Ipplepen, 1/2 way between Totnes and Newton Abbot is

Wrenwell Meadows CL | Caravan and Motorhome Club

We considered staying there over X-mas as our son lives in Ipplepen.

@eribaMotters thank you for this, small pitches doesn’t sound quite right for us… shall take a look at those alternative sites, thank you 🤩

We’ve just tried our first CL back in November and thoroughly enjoyed it, so will definitely be trying more in 2025!

Hillhead Campsite at Brixham is not far away if you want a site with good facilities and decent sized pitches. Just check the dates as I think there may be some work going on there but not sure of the dates.

Except access is not great, especially if coming from the wrong direction (as my BiL did🥵). It also seemed to me to be in the middle of nowhere (not much locally)? I didn’t much like the site either, apart from that it was great 😀

Access isn’t too bad and is better than Modbury or Start Bay but you have to remember it’s Devon’s rural roads. Your bil should have followed the directions🙄.

The site is close to Paignton, especially using the back lane short cut, and the rest of Torbay awaits. I quite liked the site…

Presumably the small(er) pitches at Totnes still provide the hallowed 6m safety spacing?

from our needs it is a shame Totnes seems to have been designed for the motorhome members, we are still going but shortened our stay, then onto the lovely spacious easy to access !!!!!!!!!!! Start Bay hope to follow the bus through last few miles.
