Hornets

They come and nest here every year, but this time they over reached themselves.  They were not aggressive and I left them get on with their work. British hornets, not Asian.

So they chose a spot sheltered from the rain and high in the roof of one of our old stone barns. I watched them for a month and the nest grew from the size of a ragged tennis ball to a big beautiful football, hanging from a single point in the apex of the roof. I thought it would in the end fall because of its own weight, and last night it crashed down.

Poor old hornets, they had worked so hard and now they have scattered.  Will they start again now or is it too late in the year?

Interesting to hear your story about our native hornets, et, let’s hope their season was complete and offspring live to see another summer.
Our insects are not doing very well I’m afraid, particularly those pollinators crucial to our food production. Hornets too play an important part in the ecosystem as do wasps as we need to look after them wherever possible.
